Indiana Sprint Week Summary

2012 Indiana Sprint Week
July 13 2012 - Gas City I-69 Speedway
Gas City, Indiana…….Noblesville, Indiana driver Bryan Clauson kicked off AMSOIL “Indiana Sprintweek” in style with a commanding victory in Friday’s 30-lap Main Event at Gas City I-69 Speedway. The win marked the third visit to victory lane for the Curb Records – R&B Trucker’s #7 Maxim/Fisher.

It was a race-long duel with five-time series champion Levi Jones, who led early in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevrolet Performance #20 Maxim/Kistler. Clauson split two cars off turn-two and jumped to the cushion to grab second quickly. From there, it was a high-low battle with Clauson screaming on the top while Jones tried to hold him off on the bottom.

Clauson powered around the outside to take the lead on lap five, but he gave it right back on lap eight after slipping over the edge of turns three and four. Jones adjusted his line with a second chance at the lead, heading to the top in turns one and two. Clauson changed his game, though, and dove across the bottom looking for the lead. The two nearly made contact on multiple occasions off turn-two as Clauson slid up and Jones darted by to protect his lead.

Finally, Clauson grabbed the lead for good with a slide-job on lap 19 that cleared Jones easily in turn-two. It was the second-career Sprintweek win for Clauson, and the 14th National Sprint Car win of his career.

“I had to be patient there with Levi on the bottom. I knew if I could hang with the top long enough and not make mistakes, we’d be good. You can’t count on him to make too many mistakes, so we had to force the issue as much as possible to put pressure on him. We finally were able to clear him there. He had kinda taken the line away up top there, so I tried to check out the bottom in one and two, and kinda had to slide him to get clear,” Clauson said.

As Clauson pulled away, a great three-car battle unfolded for the runner-up spot, as Jon Stanbrough slid by Jones for the the position in the final laps aboard the Roberts/Tate Racing – Leer Racing #21x DRC/Speedway.

“At the end, the left-rear was going flat and the right-rear was sealed over. I was just trying to roll through there. We had a heckuva battle toward the end with Levi there. We had to work at it tonight. It might have been good to miss the transfer in the heat, as we won the B and learned a little bit about the race track,” Stanbrough said.

Jones held off Dave Darland to round out the podium.

“We were good early in the race. We got to where we were draggin’ the left rear around there and didn’t have quite enough drive. We raced Bryan pretty hard for a while, and Stanbrough was coming pretty hard at the end. We just gave up a little too much and ended up third,” Jones said.

Darland finished fourth in the Jeff’s Jam-It-In Storage – AMSOIL #11 Maxim/Claxton, while Shane Cottle ended up fifth in the Epperson Painting #2 DRC/Claxton.

NEXT AMSOIL NATIONAL SPRINT RACE: July 15 – Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway – 25th AMSOIL “Indiana Sprint Week”
July 15 2012 - Lawrenceburg Speedway
Lawrenceburg, Indiana…….Ione, California driver Justin Grant survived a crazy 30-lap Main Event on Saturday to pick up his first-career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win at Lawrenceburg Speedway, capping off Night 2 of AMSOIL “Indiana Sprintweek.”

Grant started 11th, but he could only watch as the battle raged up front. Bryan Clauson jumped to the early lead but was quickly joined by Chris Windom, who moved to the lead on lap 5. Windom stretched out his lead, but that came to an abrupt halt on lap 8 as he hit the turn-three wall and flipped. He climbed out unscathed.

Dave Darland assumed the lead, but Clauson came calling again. Using the extreme upper regions of the speedway, Clauson finally circled Darland in turn-two for the lead on lap 19 as Grant was moving into the top-five. Just a lap later, Jonathan Hendrick’s fine run up to third after setting fast time ended as he slowed to a stop.

After a caution two laps later for Shane Cottle, who went up in smoke while in third, Clauson checked out on the field. Grant was on the move and stole second from Darland, who made contact with Grant the next lap and spun in turn one.

With just two laps to go, Clauson’s right-rear tire deflated under yellow and he was forced to head for the work area. With Clauson restarting, Grant ran two mistake-free laps to notch the popular victory in the Sunset Meats – S&H Nerf Bars #40 DRC/Claxton.

“My driver got lost on the way here, and we showed up after hot laps. It worked out alright. I could see Clauson’s right-rear going flat, and I love to get a win any way I can, but you hate to see that for him. It’s incredible to win our first USAC feature. I gotta thank Mark Hery so much for letting me run this thing all the time. He just wants to race all the time, which is great,” Grant said.

Damion Gardner came home second after starting 12th in the DG Racing – Pace Lighting #71 Eagle/Shaver.

“The car was good in the main. My guys are working really hard. We just gotta get a little better start. It’s hard to start 12th and beat these guys. It’s about being there and maybe having a shot at the end. I tried to be smooth, and I was hoping for him to make a mistake. I just wasn’t comfortable enough to throw any banzai move at him,” Gardner said.

Coleman Gulick capped off and eventful night with his best career finish, a third aboard the Hazardous Sports – Rob’s Market #14 DRC/Claxton.

“It’s a great night for us. I gotta thank Fred Click, our new head wrench. My crew has been on me about being patient and hitting my marks. It’s ok to run the bottom every once in a while. I kinda stuck with that and it worked out for us tonight. Maybe you’ll see me down there a little more,” Gulick said.

Hunter Schuerenberg made a comeback late in the feature to pick off a few spots and finish fourth in the Fatheadz Eyewear – R&B Trucker’s #35 Spike/Rider, and Levi Jones picked up the “Hard Charger Award” after coming from 21st to finish fifth in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Maxim/Kistler.

NEXT AMSOIL NATIONAL SPRINT RACE: July 16 – Kokomo, IN – Kokomo Speedway – 25th AMSOIL “Indiana Sprint Week”
July 16 2012 - Kokomo Speedway
Kokomo, Indiana…….Dave Darland of Lincoln, Indiana returned to victory lane at his hometown track as he ran the mean cushion of Kokomo Speedway to Monday night’s 30-lap Feature win. It was Darland’s record 16th-career AMSOIL “Indiana Sprintweek” victory.

Local youngster Logan Jarrett shot to the early lead, but it was Jon Stanbrough flexing his muscle on lap two to grab the lead and check out on the field. The fast pace set by Stanbrough left a gaggle of cars fighting for top-five spots while he put many lapped cars in between them.

Meanwhile, Bryan Clauson was on a tear through the field. With Stanbrough way out front, Clauson sliced through Darland, Tracy Hines, and Levi Jones to take the second spot, but he was well behind the leader.

With just nine laps remaining, the caution flew for Kyle Cummins, and leader Jon Stanbrough had to pit with a flat right-rear tire. Clauson assumed the lead, and after a restart with six laps remaining, Darland made his move for the lead. After Darland stalked him on the cushion, Clauson jumped to the top on the restart. But Darland was ready, and he fired a slider into the first corner. Clauson countered him, but the following lap saw Darland find his line against the cushion in turns one and two, and he flashed by Clauson down the backstretch for the lead.

Darland survived one more restart to take the win in the Jeff Walker Racing #11 Maxim/Claxton Chevy sponsored by Jeff’s Jam-It-In Storage and Parker Store.

“To race here at Kokomo and run that cushion like that, up close to the wall all the way around is just a blast. I gotta thank Jeff Walker and everybody who helps us. I didn’t want to see that yellow when I was gaining on him, but we got a good restart and got going up on the top,” Darland said in front of an energized crowd.

Clauson fended off Jones for the second spot in the Curb Records – R&B Trucker’s #7 Maxim/Fisher.

“The boys had it hooked up again. When it gets up on the fence like that, though, you’re gonna have a hard time beating Darland. You saw that, he drove right by us. It’s a good bounce back from last night, and hopefully we can keep the momentum going. We feel like we’ve had the best car all three nights, but Darland just got me tonight,” Clauson said.

Jones ended up third after starting ninth in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Maxim/Kistler Chevy.

“Bryan and I were having a pretty good race there for a while. Then all of a sudden, Dave got rolling on the top. He’s won 170,000 races here around the top, it seems like. He’s still the best running the cushion here. We hate to lose, and we’ve been really close every night. We’ve got a day to work on our car and looking forward to four more nights,” Jones said.

Hunter Schuerenberg finished fourth in the Fatheadz Eyewear – R&B Trucker’s #35 Spike/Rider, while Darren Hagen rounded out the top-five in the Mean Green – Oxydol #69 Chalk/Stanton Mopar.

CLAYTON COMES OFF BENCH, WINS AT TERRE HAUTE

Terre Haute, Indiana…….Daron Clayton made just his third start of the season with the AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series on Thursday night in the “Don Smith Classic” at the Terre Haute Action Track, and he made it count. The Sikeston, Missouri driver took advantage of his pole starting spot and endured thirty grueling laps around the famed half-mile to take the win in front of a frenzied crowd.

Clayton shot out to the lead over Sunday’s winner Justin Grant, and it was off to the races. Coleman Gulick quickly showed himself as a contender to beat as he moved to the second spot. He moved in on Clayton and nearly took the lead off turn-four on one occasion before Clayton settled in and pulled away. As the top-two raced together, Bryan Clauson and Dave Darland reeled them in. Darland briefly looked for second before his left-rear shredded on lap 16 while running third.

From there, Clauson became the hunter as he disposed of Gulick on the restart. Clauson, who changed an engine after setting Fast Time, closed in on the leader before fading late in the race as his right-rear tire was coming apart. Jon Stanbrough jumped to the second spot and closed slightly, but no one would stop Clayton from an emotional win, capped with wild victory donuts down the front stretch in the Ray Morgan Motorsports #92 Spike/Chevy.

“The history here is phenomenal. I can’t even explain what it means to me to win here. It’s my third win here. I’m still in shock a little bit at winning another one here. I had Ray (Morgan) to keep me sane down in turn three, telling me how my lead was. It’s so hard for me to start out front and stay there. I was searching around, trying to find the best place to be. This place changes so much during the race. It was a fine line up there trying to run the high line, and it worked out well,” Clayton said of his seventh career USAC win.

Stanbrough soldiered home second in the Roberts/Tate Racing – Leer Racing #21x DRC/Speedway.

“Once I got by Bryan, I tried to run the car a little harder and I think that made it worse. We blistered both rear tires, and you just lose all your forward bite when you do that. Hopefully we can dig out of sixth in Sprintweek points and keep digging. Maybe we can still get there,” Stanbrough said.

After a battle with Levi Jones over the final few laps, Tracy Hines came away with third in the MP Environmental Services – Support Esophagus Cancer Research #4 DRC/Shaver.

“We fell back early a little bit. We finally got the top line going pretty good and went back forward. I felt like we were staying with them at the very end, but not any faster. It was a demanding track tonight. Track was really good. The place is definitely hard on the engines, as ours got really hot. We were pretty good at the end, though,” Hines said.

Jones brought it home fourth after starting 11th in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Maxim/Kistler Chevy. Gulick held on to score a top-five in the Hazardous Sports – Rob’s Market #14 DRC/Claxton Chevy.

KEVIN THOMAS, JR. TAKES FIRST CAREER WIN AT BLOOMINGTON

Bloomington, Indiana…….Kevin Thomas, Jr. from Cullman, Alabama captured his first career win in Friday’s AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series 30-lapper at Bloomington Speedway. The youngster narrowly missed winning four weeks ago at Wilmot Raceway in Wisconsin, but he would not let this one slip away.

Dave Darland let at the outset, but it didn’t take long for Thomas to come calling. While the leaders were bottled up on the bottom, Thomas flew to the top shelf. From his starting position to eighth, Thomas tracked down Darland to take the lead off turn-two on lap six.

From there, it was a test of mental strength. Thomas appeared to have a strong car on restarts, but over a few laps, Darland would creep back in as they approached slower cars. Each time, just as they entered traffic, a caution appeared. Thomas used the final restart with nine laps remaining to stretch his lead even larger. Darland closed as the white flag flew, but Thomas was not to be denied as he took the win in the Black Jack Oil – Indy Metal Finishing #9K Spike/Kistler.

“(Crew chief) Bubby (Jones) just gave me a great race car and told me to drive the hell out of it. Everybody was huggy-poling at the beginning. Our car was a little snug, and I could run hard up higher. It worked out great for us. I didn’t really have a choice but to go for it. For the yellows to come out like they did, I was really fortunate. We probably were not gonna be as good in traffic, so those were big breaks for us. We’ve been struggling up here for a few years, and now we’ve got a great sponsor and crew chief, and this is just a dream come true right now,” Thomas said.

After the great battle throughout the race with Thomas, Darland held on for second in the Jeff’s Jam-It-In Storage – Parker Store of Arizona #11 Maxim/Claxton.

“That was pretty physical out there for an old man. It’s hard to know where to be when you’re in the lead. I figured the bottom would be tough to beat. He must have found something up there and went by us. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t stay green and get into traffic. I gotta thank my team and Bloomington Speedway for a great track,” Darland said.

The other story of the race was the impressive climb of Fairland, Indiana driver Brent Beauchamp, who also jumped to the top early in the race and put on a show flying through the pack in the Competition Suspension – Concrete Connection #11B Spike/Foxco. Beauchamp started 15th and finished third, picking up the “Hard Charger Award” while notching his best-career finish with the National Series.

“Everybody just kinda was stuck on the bottom at the start. I had to just go where they weren’t. This is just great. I’m just taking this week race-by-race. If we run good one night, we’ll go to the next. We weren’t going to Terre Haute from the beginning, but now I’m kinda wishing I had. We just haven’t been able to put it together like this, so it’s just a huge confidence booster,” Beauchamp said.

Jerry Coons, Jr. came home fourth in the R&B Trucker’s – Jockish Flowers #71P DRC/Foxco for the Phillips Motorsports team, while Bryan Clauson rounded out the top-five after starting tenth in the Curb Records – R&B Trucker’s #7 Maxim/Fisher.

STANBROUGH SOARS TO HAUBSTADT "SPRINTWEEK" WIN

Haubstadt, Indiana…….It became six winners in six nights of the 25th AMSOIL “Indiana Sprintweek” as Jon Stanbrough of Avon, Indiana picked up his second win of the season on Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway.

Stanbrough led throughout, but the race was slowed on numerous occasions over the first half of the race. After moving to second just before halfway, Bryan Clauson used a lap 17 restart to go for the lead. The two exchanged slide-jobs and cross-overs before Stanbrough cleared Clauson. The two both ran the cushion, but Clauson nailed it in turn-two on lap 19 and flipped.

After Clauson changed a flat left-rear tire and restarted 17th, Stanbrough found another gear out front and stretched out a monster lead over the final twelve laps to win by a healthy margin in the Roberts/Tate Racing – Leer Racing #21x DRC/Speedway.

“I was trying to save a little back and wasn’t running as hard as I could, but then I saw Bryan come at me there around halfway and knew I had to pick it up a notch. We had the red and I got a few signals from (crew chief) Daryl (Tate), and I ran a pretty good pace after that. I gotta thank all of our sponsors and the fans for helping us get through this week, and especially my crew,” Stanbrough said.

Levi Jones started from row-two and raced within the top-five throughout the race, finally clearing Jonathan Hendrick to safely put himself in the second spot, where he finished in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Maxim/Kistler.

“We just hung in there and ripped the cushion the whole time and came up a little bit short. We’re still in the hunt, and it’s always great to come here to Haubstadt. I love to hear the cheers and the boos at this place,” Jones said.

Unbelievably, Clauson regrouped from his earlier mistake and put on a charge for the ages over the final twelve laps. He was back into the top-ten in just a couple laps and moved all the way to the third-spot without the aid of another caution in the Curb Records – R&B Trucker’s #7 Maxim/Fisher.

“I pretty much just stepped on it there. I really thought our Sprintweek was over because of me flipping like an idiot. But we rallied, and that’s what championships are made of. It’s not the night we could have had, but we salvaged and we’ll try to go to Putnamville tomorrow and knock one off,” Clauson said.

The trio has now solidified themselves as the contenders for this year’s “Indiana Sprintweek” crown, as Jones holds a twelve-point over both Stanbrough and Clauson, who are tied for second.

Hendrick finished off a solid night by recording his career-best finish of fourth in the McAlister’s Deli – Hendrick Pool #68 Spike/Foxco. Chase Stockon put on a show of his own, scoring the Schroeder Torsion Bars “Hard Charger Award” by rallying from 20th to finish fifth in the Terre Haute First Financial Bank – Superior Tank & Trailer #32 DRC/Fisher.

PUTNAMVILLE GOES TO DARLAND; JONES TAKES 4TH "SPRINTWEEK" TITLE

Putnamville, Indiana…….Dave Darland won the battle and Levi Jones won the war on Sunday night at Lincoln Park Speedway, as the 25th AMSOIL “Indiana Sprintweek” concluded with a great championship race and a fantastic battle for the win. Darland was making his 500th career Sprint Car Feature start, and cashed that in for his 37th career win, tying Sheldon Kinser for seventh on the all-time list.

While Darland was racking up his 17th “Indiana Sprintweek” race win, Levi Jones capped off a consistent week to tie Kevin Thomas as the only drivers to ever capture four “Sprintweek” championships.

Shane Cottle jumped to the lead from the pole position and was in command for much of the race. A demanding track led to multiple stoppages early in the event, but with the rhythm of a longer run, Cottle was pulling away. Behind him, it was Darland holding down second while the “race within a race” took place behind him with Jones, Bryan Clauson, and Jon Stanbrough racing for position and a potential “Sprintweek” title, as Kevin Thomas, Jr. stuck his nose in running the bottom from his 13th starting position.

After a restart with seven to go, Darland found his groove on the cushion. On lap 26, with a monster run off turn-two he threw a turn-three slidejob on Cottle for the top spot. Cottle was ready and turned back under him to lead the lap. Darland came right back at him, though, and he made it stick on lap 27. From there, he would not be challenged as he scored the win in the Jeff’s Jam-It-In Storage – Parker Store of Arizona #11 Maxim/Claxton.

“The track was changing throughout the race so I just had to keep trying different things until I found something that worked. I had to find a way to out-do him somehow in one and two and have a chance to make a move in three and four. KT (Kevin Thomas, Jr.) actually helped me a little bit to make Cottle nervous on the bottom, I think. I was hoping when I had that run that we weren’t gonna end up in the woods. We had him cleared plenty there and just had to keep getting off the corner to beat him,” Darland said.

Thomas stuck to his line on the bottom and eventually moved by Cottle as well, capping off a strong run to end his “Sprintweek” in the Black Jack Oil – Indy Metal Finishings #9K Spike/Kistler with a runner-up finish and the Schroeder Torsion Bars “Hard Charger” Award.

“I didn’t think I would ever be running the bottom like that. It just took a lot of patience. That was a long race for me, and I just had to wait and wait for people to mess up and try to hit it off the corner. For us to come on like this in the biggest week of the year is a really great feeling,” Thomas said.

On the last lap, still looking for enough points to steal the “Sprintweek” title, Clauson threw a massive turn-three slidejob on Cottle to take third in the Curb Records – R&B Trucker’s #7 Maxim/Fisher.

“It was game on tonight. All we could do tonight is do our best and beat them both, and we did that. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough cars in between us to do it. Came up a few points short again. It was a great week for us, and a couple bad breaks undid us this week,” Clauson said.

Cottle held on for fourth in the Epperson Painting – Infinity Shocks #2 Spike/Claxton, while Jones cleared Stanbrough off turn-four to steal the fifth spot and secure his week-long championship in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Maxim/Kistler.

“We definitely wanted to win races, but we were in the hunt every night and put together a great week. It’s an awesome week with great fans, and it’s great to drive for this race. Tonight, we were fast time and drove up through the heat race. It was tough for us to go anywhere in the feature, but I kept the 7 and the 21x right in front of us the whole race, and that was what we had to do to win it,” Jones said.
