Why are they doing heat races and qualifying races instead of the normal USAC setup?

They do every year with this race. I've seen a lot of races using this format. IMO, this is the best of all formats. Every position in both sets of qualifying races is worth contending for.

Can someone give a quick explanation of this system. Are they giving passing points or taking the top transfer spots or what? Thanks in advance

There are no time trials. They draw and run two sets of what look like heat races. Both award finishing and passing points. At the end of the second set, he who has the most points starts from the pole in the feature and on back from there, according to points.

Bear with me everyone - cell service is next to impossible so it is slow going getting and receiving updates......but i have multiple friends helping...

Also, the format is almost identical to MSCS this year, except they run a set of heat races set up by pill draw number (staggered) and passing and finishing points are awarded - then a set of qualifying races are ran which are set up by the previous heat races points total. After those the combined points are tabulated with the top 16 in points going to the Feature and 17th on back going to a b-mail, top 6 from b-main will transfer to feature....I believe they also redraw for their top 8 - but don't hold me to it......

Report from the track: Dusty and Dangerous. Delayed Heats due to drivers not being able to see. Watering Track now. Coleman's group had to nearly stop in 3 since they could not see. Crowd was booing already in Hot Laps. I wonder why no problems with the Wing Cars last night?
