Jason Goff adds to family heritage at Speedrome

INDIANAPOLIS – No family has dominated three-quarter midget racing in Indiana like brothers Terry and Oogie Goff of rural Fortville.

Here’s the bad news for their rivals in the United Midget Racing Association: they’re not the last of the bunch.

Jason Goff, Terry’s 26-year-old son, turned a borrowed ride into a resounding victory Sunday night at the Indianapolis Speedrome, easily capturing the 30-lap UMRA TQ feature that capped the Rumble Series’ outdoor season at the fifth-mile paved track. Fast qualifier Brent Turner was a distant second, followed by Will Nedderman, Doug Roland and Ron Combs.

The significance of the win – coming at such a historic venue – wasn’t lost on Goff, who literally grew up at the Speedrome watching his father race TQs and USAC midgets.

“I sat right up there in the grandstands and saw Tony Stewart, John Andretti and Ken Schrader race here,” a beaming Goff said. “Mario Andretti raced here. My dad raced here.

“There’s been a lot of guys make their name at this place.”

Until a few weeks, the younger Goff had to wonder when his time would come. Although he broke into the UMRA ranks back in 2003, he estimates he’s run no more than 40 features over seven seasons – earning one previous victory – as he struggled to land a regular ride.

He got his opportunity when his uncle, Oogie, fell off a ladder about a month ago, blowing out his left knee and forcing him out of his No. 96 car.

“This car is as good as any here,” the younger Goff said. “Any of these cars (the Goff brothers owned five in Sunday’s race) is capable of winning.”

With the fastest 10 qualifiers inverted, Goff started on the front row and grabbed the lead for good on lap four, bumping his way past Jeremy Rainwater in turn four.

“It was a pretty good boot,” Rainwater said, “but I was well on my way to blowing my motor. I was slowing, anyway.”

“There was a little contact,” Goff acknowledged, “but I had him. I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Terry Goff appeared to have the fastest car, charging from ninth starting position into the top five within five laps. He had taken over fourth place when he suddenly slowed on lap 12, the victim of a blown engine. That allowed Goff to watch the remainder of the feature from the infield, and he got an eyeful as his son expertly sliced through lapped traffic. He was never challenged.

“He’s really come a long way,” the elder Goff said. “He’s a pretty darn good race car driver – smooth, real smooth. Makes dad pretty proud.”

Dad still has some bragging rights, though. His victory a night earlier at Mt. Lawn Speedway near New Castle – where his son finished second – was the 109th of his storied UMRA career, third on the all-time list and 25 shy of Ronnie Ambrose’s record. Oogie Goff is fourth in UMRA history with 44 wins.

Jason Goff? He’s at two – and glad to be counting.

Stiffler wins in MiniCup

Bradley Stiffler won the accompanying 25-lap feature for IKO MiniCup cars, taking the lead from Casey Willingham with six laps to go and holding off fast qualifier Cole Williams.
C.J. Leary, son of 1997 Hoosier Hundred winner Chuck Leary, won twice in karts, while Tyler Kramer, Jacob Hamilton and Ty Canoles notched single wins. Jonathon Lesiecki posted a pair of quarter midget wins and was joined in victory lane by Kyle Kerns, Skyler Bray and Austin Nigh.
Following four events at the Indianapolis Speedrome, Tony Barhorst’s Rumble Series will return to its indoor roots for the 12th annual “Rumble in Fort Wayne” on Saturday, Dec. 26 and Sunday, Dec. 27 at the Memorial Coliseum Expo Center. Tony Stewart and Lou Cicconi Jr. won the midget features last year.
The event also features winged outlaw modified midgets, karts and quarter midgets, with complete programs each day. For more information, visit rumbleseries.com or contact Barhorst at (317) 418-3216 or tbracefest@aol.com.

Great run Jason!!! Thank you Tony for having the UMRA at such a historic venue such as the speedrome. Being my first time racing there it was awsome. Many of us have been looking forward to that race all season. Looking forward for the opportunity to run there again. Great job by you and all of your staff to put on a great show.
