Gehrke Tames Lincoln Speedway, Claims First POWRi Career Win
Saturday, July 12th 2014

Lincoln, IL. - Chett Gehrke of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma won a hard fought battle with Zach Daum to take his first career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series feature win at the ¼ mile, semi-banked Lincoln Speedway. The event at Lincoln Speedway was co-sanctioned by POWRi and the Badger Midget Series.

Pole-sitter Parker Price-Miller, the 2013 POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series Rookie of the Year would lead the field to green with Gehrke on the outside of the front row. The Kokomo, Indiana native would take the lead on the initial restart, but Darren Kingston would spin in turn one, bringing out the first caution and resulting in a complete restart. When Price-Miller would bring the field to green again, his Kami Ronk owned, Toyota-powered Spike would power to the front and lead the first seven laps closely followed by Darren Hagen of Riverside, California.

On lap eight, Hagen would power past Price-Miller and into the lead in the Five-Six, Inc., Great Clips-sponsored, Esslinger-powered Beast. On lap 14, the under-powered car of Colten Cottle would slow to a stop in turn four, bunching the field back up, giving Zach Daum and Tyler Thomas an opportunity to steal the lead from Hagen. On the restart Daum would sneak past Hagen on the bottom and into the lead, leaving Hagen, Tyler Thomas, and Chett Gehrke to battle for second.

As Gehrke quickly dispatched Thomas and Hagen for second, he was soon reeling in Daum for the lead. As Daum and Gehrke battled for the lead, Andrew Felker of Carl Junction, Missouri would bring out the third caution of the evening as the RAB Racing, Fontana-powered Spike would spin around and come to rest in turn four.

With 19 laps in the book, Gehrke would lead the field back to the green and as quickly as Gehrke took the lead from Daum, Daum would reclaim the lead from Gehrke on the bottom as Austin Brown would move the #7 Toyota-powered Boss Chassis into the third position. On lap 24, Gehrke would be too tough for Daum to hold off and he would reclaim the lead on the top in turns three and four.

As Gehrke did his best to pull away from Daum, Jacob Patton of Bethalto, Illinois would loop it in the middle of turns three and four, bringing out the fourth and final caution of the evening. When the field took the green, Daum would be unable to reclaim the lead from Gehrke as Chett Gehrke would lead the field to the checkered flag in the Skip and Diana Matteson-owned, Fontana-powered Spike, followed closely by Zach Daum's Toyota-powered Eagle in second, and Darren Hagen in third. Coming in fourth was Austin Brown, and rounding out the top-five for a career-best finish was Spencer Bayston of Lebanon, Indiana.

"It's been a long time coming. I didn't know if it was ever going to happen," explained Chett Gehrke. "I run fourth for quite a while and didn't think it was going to happen. I tried just about every line there was and finally made the top work in three and four.

"It's not a win, but it was a good race," said second place finisher, Zach Daum. "He found a line that he made work. He earned it."

"These guys at Great Clips worked their butts off all night to get me comfortable. We had a good race car, a good solid car. These guys worked their butts off and third place is a testament to my crew."

Co-Sanctioned POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series/Badger Midgets Feature results (30 laps): 1. 11C - Chett Gehrke 2. 5D - Zach Daum 3. 56 - Darren Hagen 4. 7 - Austin Brown 5. 39 - Spencer Bayston 6. 9P - Parker Price-Miller 7. 88 - Terry Babb 8. 55 - Nick Knepper 9. 32 - Garrett Aitken 10. 25 - Jake Blackhurst 11. 3X - Joe B. Miller 12. 85 - Shane Hollingsworth 13. 3N - Jake Neuman 14. 3 - Robbie Ray 15. 79J - Jacob Patton 16. 52C - Isaac Chapple 17. 11R - Ryan Chriswell 18. 2 - Seth Motsinger 19. 94 - Darren Kingston 20. 2B - Tyler Thomas 21. 57 - Andrew Felker 22. 5C - Colten Cottle

I didnt make it there. I was going there, then ended up having to work late on a crucial piece of equipment. By the time I got out of work it was really to late to head that way.

I was glad to see that Chett won,as I am his only fan. Hope I can see him in victory lane on Friday night at Little Belleville,or Saturday at Farmington.

Hey Andrew,

Is that Chet's first win since that one we watched together at Mt Lawn? You nearly missed that one also, if you remember!

Rob.

(P.S. I'm hoping to catch you at the Smackdown this year and possibly in IL the week earlier)

Yeah I remember getting to Mt. Lawn late after having to change the air compressor on the way there. Chett has won a few more times since then in Focus midgets, and earlier this year he won at Gas City in Don Moore's midget.
