DAMION GARDNER SEEKS FOURTH CALIFORNIA SPRINT WEEK CHAMPIONSHIP!

(August 28, 2017, Concord, CA) Six-time USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series champion Damion Gardner is poised and ready to defend one of his most prestigious titles when he contests the “5th Annual California Sprint Week.” The grueling test of drivers and crews will see six races on five different tracks in eight nights and will begin this Saturday.

Through the first four years of “California Sprint Week,” the Concord, California racer has dominated the stats page. He has won three of the first four championships. He also leads in main event wins as he has victories in seven of the first 23 CSW races. The next closest driver in wins only has three. Likewise, the slender star has dominated in qualifying as well. He has been quick timer at six of the 23 races. Once again, the next closest driver has three.

The 2018 edition of “California Sprint Week” will begin this Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd, at Calistoga Speedway in the gorgeous “Wine Country.” After the two day stay at the big half-mile, the series will make the half-hour drive west to the Petaluma Speedway on Monday, September 3rd. Drivers and crews will get a couple nights off before continuing the series on Thursday, September 6th, at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. After Chico, the grind continues for the teams as they trek 250-miles to race the following night at Ocean Speedway, which is located in the Central Coast town of Watsonville. The final race will see the team’s journey two and a half hours south to Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford on Saturday, September 8th.

Of the five tracks comprising the series this year, Gardner has “Sprint Week” wins on four of them. Three of the victories have come at Chico, while he has scored one victory each at Petaluma, Ocean and Hanford. The only track in this year’s CSW he has not won on is Calistoga. However, on his way to the championship last year, he had a fast-qualifying time at Calistoga and his lone CSW main event win was at Chico.

In addition to the “California Sprint Week” title being up for grabs, the six-race series will be a pivotal part of the season-long USAC/CRA Championship chase. Seeking a record-tying seventh title in the combined CRA, SCRA and USAC/CRA Series’ dating back to 1946, Gardner is second in the standings as he heads north, but he is only three-points out of first. He is currently tied for the series lead with two main event wins.

Gardner’s six USAC/CRA titles have come in 2005, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The break in between 2005 through 2013 is a result of him spending seven seasons racing in the Midwest.

Considering those seven years Gardner spent racing in the Midwest, it is incredible to fathom that he is the all-time leader in wins in the USAC/CRA Series. To date he has 77 victories and that more than doubles the next closest driver who has 38. And, on the same CRA, SCRA, USAC/CRA list dating back to 1946, he is sixth all-time in wins with 90. That is only eight wins out of being tied for third and 15 from being tied for first.

As usual, Gardner will be in the famous Mark Alexander owned, Steve Alexander tuned silver #4 during “California Sprint Week.” The combo has blended to win five USAC/CRA crowns, the three “California Sprint Week” titles and the 2016 Oval Nationals.

As well as his prowess in sprint cars, the driver who is affectionately known as “The Demon” to his legion of fans, recently made a rare appearance in the USAC Western Midget Series at Santa Maria on August 11th. He dominated the night by sweeping the show via posting fast time, winning his heat race and the 30-lap main event.

Much of the success for the Alexander Team’s prowess and the recent midget victory can be attributed to longtime racing devotee and historian Tom Malloy and his Trench Shoring Company. The team and Malloy struck up a deal just before the start of the season and it has paid dividends as they chase not only the USAC/CRA championship, but also victories at racetracks around the west coast.

Gardner and Alexander would also like to thank the following sponsors for being part of their 2018 racing effort. Trench Shoring, Garnica Trucking, Larry Murakami Contracting, Berdoo Auto Body, Lucas Oil, Weld Wheels, Willwood Brakes, Advanced Suspension, Simpson, FK Rod Ends, Astro Titanium, Schoenfeld Headers, JD Performance, Flashburn, Deboer Trucking, Maas Powdercoat, Brown & Miller, DMI, Waterman, Indy Race Parts, Shaver Engines and Spike Chassis.
