Dick Gaines Memorial to be Held in September for Just the Third Time in Nineteen Tries

Although it is traditionally a late August event, Mother Nature has caused the Dick Gaines Memorial to be run in September on two previous occasions where Jimmy Light (2007) and Josh Hodges (2016) were victorious.

September 3, 2007 – Jimmy Light Wins Dick Gaines Memorial

It was only fitting that a race run in honor of a legend drew a king-sized turnout. That was the case Saturday night at Lawrenceburg Speedway where nearly 50 non-winged sprint cars showed up to vie in the 4th Annual Dick Gaines Memorial.

The event required six Heat races and two B-mains to settle the starting field for the prestigious event. Brett Burdette, Marc Arnold, Blake Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Light, Brent Beauchamp, and Cole Whitt planted themselves directly into the $3,000-to-win feature lineup by winning the heats, while Ricky Williams and Kevin Briscoe, who won the 2nd Annual Dick Gaines Memorial, led the qualifiers from the consies by winning the B-mains.

When the green flag dropped to start the 25-lap feature, Blake Fitzpatrick got crossed up in the middle of the field. Oddly enough, just about everybody managed to miss him, whether through luck or an amazing display of heads-up driving.

On the second attempt to start the feature, Brett Burdette lost it and spun out in front of the field in turn two. Unfortunately, he took two strong contenders, Brent Beauchamp and Cole Whitt, with him.

When the green flag waived a third time, the field was four cars short, but this time the start took. Marc Arnold took the lead from the outside of the front row but polesitter Jimmy Light was in hot pursuit.

Arnold and Light battled each other until Lap 16 when Light slipped past Arnold into the lead. When Light cleared Arnold he began to pull away and he gradually built a respectable lead on his way to the win.

Arnold held on to finish second ahead of Casey Shuman, Brady Short, and Joss Moffatt. Matt Westfall, Ricky Williams, Derek Franks, Dickie Gaines (from the last row), and Larry Beck rounded out the top ten.

Jerry Back won the super stock feature ahead of Joe Petrey, Jay Deckard, Dan Fugate, and Austin Back, while Nelson Gingery claimed the pure stock feature over Shawn McIntosh, Larry Gingery, Ed Johnson, and Herb Asbury. Coleman Gulick was victorious in the AMSA mini sprint feature over Jim Gardner, Dustin Hueston, Boyd Wolff, and Jason Soudrette.

September 3, 2016 – Josh Hodges Wins Dick Gaines Memorial

A total of 29 sprint cars were in attendance Saturday night for the 13th Annual Dick Gaines Memorial, each looking to pick up the $3,000 winner’s purse – along with the still undecided Kelsey Chevrolet Sprints track points championship where Jarrett Andretti held a 140-point advantage over defending track champion, Joss Moffatt.

Twenty cars started the 25-lap feature with Jordan Kinser and Moffatt on the front row. Kinser jumped the initial start bringing out the caution and was penalized a row moving Josh Hodges to the pole and Kinser to the inside of row two.

When the race was restarted Moffatt took the early lead with Hodges taking over the point on Lap 2. Hodges would go on to lead the final 24 laps and cruise to the checkers 2.271 seconds ahead of the field. The win was Hodges's second of the season at Lawrenceburg after winning the Jason Soudrette Memorial back on June 11th.

Moffatt would finish second ahead of Andretti (from seventh) knocking 15 markers off Andretti’s point lead. Cooper Clouse and Kyle Cummins finished fourth and fifth respectively, with Tyler Thomas, Nick Bilbee, Kinser, Garrett Abrams, and Tony DiMattia rounding out the top ten.

Moffatt, Kinser, DiMattia, and Hodges were heat winners and Dickie Gaines won the B-main.

Joey Kramer led all twenty laps to win the Budweiser UMP Modified feature over Kyle Schornick, Scotty Kincaid, David Spille, and Broc Burton leaving Kincaid and Spille tied for the point lead with one race remaining.

Will McRoberts won a crash-filled feature in the Impact Sports Pure Stocks over Eric House, Chris Combs, Danny Eichler, and John Grace, while Dalton Smith won for the fifth time this season in the Bessler’s U Pull & Save Hornet division over Ryan Eversole, Kenny Higbie, Brandon Stephens, and David Willoughby.

Please join us Saturday night to honor Dick Gaines and the Gaines Family. The Kelsey Chevrolet Sprints 25-lap feature will pay $3,000 to win / $300 to start. Also competing will be the KOI Auto Parts UMP Modifieds, Impact Sports Pure Stocks, and the Bessler’s U Pull & Save Hornets.

The track is also hosting a “Food Drive” in conjunction with their friends at Kroger. For each item you bring to donate you will receive a chance to win a $100 Kroger gift card.

General admission gates are set to open at 5:00 pm Saturday with hot laps at 6:00 pm, and opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7:00 pm.
