I thought maybe these "retro result" threads had about worn out their welcome here and considered posting some "future result" threads just for variety. But, that wouldn't be fair to those who don't care to know race results in advance so let's go with one more of these oldies. :wink

Some other observations (hey, it's my thread.....I can opinionize (Bushism) if I want to (:O: ) : + Don Brown from CA was a master craftsman. He created several beautiful race cars including the "Mechanical Rabbit". Wish I had a picture. If I did, I would try to use Ovalmeiser's instructions to post it here. + New Bremen was paved then and as you can see car count was not a problem on 6/30/68. In fact, on 7/4/68 Salem Speedway drew 38 cars and on 7/7/68 Dayton Speedway pitted 36 sprinters. More on those 2 races below. + No support classes or provisionals in those days. + Gary Byers listed above is the father of super Dave Darland fan Pancho, whom many of you may know. I remember Gary's career more for his midget drives. + The 7/4/68 Salem race had Sonny Ates in the Iddings Auto Glass #93 with fast time at 18.06, only .08 seconds slower than A.J. Foyt's then TR of 17.98. Jerry "Scratch" Daniels #3, Bruce Walkup #1 and Bill Koepfer #9 were drivers added to the Salem show. Daniels and Al Smith took each other out in the consy. Feature was won by Wib Spalding from 3rd followed by Charlie Masters, DonThomas, Bruce Walkup, Bob Pratt, & Larry Dickson. + The 7/7/68 Dayton Speedway (my all-time favorite paved track) again showed Sonny Ates in the #93 getting quick time with a new track record AND a new world's record (it says here) at a sizzling 16.85 (115.311). New drivers on this, the 3rd of 3 pavement shows in 8 days, included Johnny Parsons, Jr. #17, Jim Hines #58, Bud Randall #89, Bruce Jacobi #105, and (drum roll please) Duke Cook #90 (:applaud ![]() + My uninformed theory, as nothing but a dumb fan, on why car counts were so much greater in those days is that the same race car was used on both dirt and pavement (for the most part) with different tires and some suspension changes. When roadsters started creeping in followed by those super ugly but fast RE crap, costs went through the roof and nearly killed off pavement racing in the process. There were other factors of course, but IMO the need to have 2 different race cars to run for the championship pretty much weeded out all but the big bucks operations to compete for feature and season championship wins. :checkered: Finally!!!!!!

I don't see how these would ever wear out their welcome. Thanks again so much for sharing and bringing back memories. I just wish there was some way to capture what the members of this board have seen, know and think. That would make a great book.

It is hard to believe that a guy as good as Wib Spalding was in a sprint car that he is still not in the Hall of Fame. I believe he was third in the USAC season points that year. I know he won a ton of track championships throughout Illinois and Missouri.

Gil Hess was a Lawrenceburg regular that went USAC. He was killed at Salem (if memory serves me correctly). I also remember Bill Puterbaugh being involved in that crash? Correct me if Im wrong here, I was in the 8th grade at the time. Jim Bob Luebbert was another Burg regular who took a shot at USAC. He now owns Speedway Monogramming directly across the street from the short chute tunnel on 16th Street. Mike Mosely was driving the Watson DOHC ford sprinter. That car had an incredible sound!!!!!

The guy in the #69 car. Wasn't he a union pipe fitter from Ohio? Sure didn't think he could last 30 laps.

Man, the names in these threads bring back some memories huh? I see Bud Randall in the text about Dayton Speedway. He was one of my Dad's friends he used to race with. They traveled together to save money and helped each other alot. I remember as a little kid being at a funeral (there were alot back then) and Bud was there. He was telling me about a crash he had one time which did a lot of rib damage. He was like, put your hand right here and feel my ribcage. It was wierd as hell, there were bones poking up nearly out of his skin. Nothing was straight or where it was supposed to be. Those dudes were nuts. :kookoo
Anyway, that is a pretty stellar list of drivers huh? I'm sure I was there that day but don't remember it, I would have been 5 years old at the time. I grew up about 30 miles from New Bremen and we never missed a race there. I always liked it better paved than dirt. We parked in the infield, did the picnic thing, it was a great family track. :thumb David. Marv, by all means post some photos if you have 'em! |

Jim Bob was a plumber/pipefitter from a community called Sayler Park in Cincinnati OH. Lots of racers from that little community. He went out west and worked for Agajanian for a while (circa 1966-67?) was affiliated with Don Edmunds and drove Don's cars in South Africa, came back here (with Bruce Walkup in tow) and worked with Mike Devin and LLoyd Ruby. The guy knows a lot of people. You can go into his Monogramming/Souvenoir shop in Speedway on any given day and see guys like Billy Vukovich Jr hanging around.

Don Brown from CA was a master craftsman. He created several beautiful race cars......FishBurger
Don Brown and Herb Porter built the beautiful Black#5 Oakie Drout Sprinter that Ross Smith drove to the track championship in either 66' or 67' at Lawrenceburg (along with Jim Bob, Ross Smith was another of those racers from the community of Sayler Park in Cincinnati OH). Bobby Marshman had driven that car in USAC before it was sold to Oakie Drout. After that, the car was sold to and driven by Audie Schwartz (Charlie's father, I believe). |
