Terry Wayne Riggs

December 17, 1953 - January 15, 2019


Terry Wayne Riggs, 65, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at St. Franciscan Health in Indianapolis.

Terry was born December 17, 1953, in Shelbyville, to James W. and Jean (Swango) Riggs. On April 22, 1978, he married Sheila Hatcher and she survives.

In addition to Sheila, Terry is survived by his two daughters, Kevin Prickett, husband, Michael, and Terilyn Weaver, husband Tony, all of Shelbyville; and son, Casey Riggs, fiance Natalia Shammas, Shelbyville. Six Grandchildren: Julia, Logan & Reece Prickett; Cruz Nedderman; Ava & Aria Weaver. Sisters, Debbie Montgomery, husband Jerry, of Florida; Cindy Huber, husband Norman, Shelbyville; Kathy Downing, husband Randy, Shelbyville & Sue Harding, husband Kenny, Florida. Brother Rick Riggs, wife, Lori, Shelbyville & numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim Riggs and granddaughter, Willow Weaver.

Terry graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1971. Terry was a lifelong entrepreneur who owned and operated several successful businesses.

Terry was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and supported numerous non-profit organizations in Shelby County.

Terry was passionate about open wheel racing and owned race cars in USAC’s top divisions for over 20 years. The Indiana Underground, #37 car could be seen at tracks all over the country and claimed many victories with many of the best drivers around.

In 2000, Terry’s red & black #37 car won the championship in USAC’s premium Silver Crown Division. His championship car is currently on display at the Indianapolis Motors Speedway museum.

In addition to racing, Terry enjoyed making huge waves in his infamous twin 454 cigar boat, cruising to Sturgis on his Harley and, above all, spending time with his family and close friends.

Visitation will be from 2:00 - 5:00 pm Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, with a vigil at 5:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Monday, January 21st, 2019 at St Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St, in Shelbyville.

Interment will be at St Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Shelbyville.
