What would happen if they tried that today? How 'bout if they banned power steering (I'll be most cars didn't have it then)? |

Back when the Kings Royal started it was a 50 lap race but some drivers complained about it, including Steve Kinser, so it was cut to 40 laps. 500 laps and no power steering. That's one reason some drivers had arms and shoulders like trees back then. I wonder if these little 5 ft. 6 inch drivers that weigh about 125 lbs. today could manage a 100 laps. I wonder how many drivers appreciate today what the older generation went through and for a lot less money.

Looks like the '67 race was discussed on here a few years ago:

Here's a car that ran as a supermod. one night & a sprintcar the next night. The fuel cell in this car was a sprintcar tail. Mid '70's thru early '80's

It's been quite a few years ago but I was talking to Rick Ferkel. Rick told me he ran those 500 races. He said that he used the same tire in two races. That is 1000 laps. Rick said the tire was as hard as cement. I think he said the first race he made his sprint car out of his kids swing set and it lasted about 50 laps before it came apart. Like I said it was qite a few years ago but I believe that is how the strory went.
