Nothing against today's Speedway announcers, but since I started going to the 500 in 1960, Tom Carnegie on the PA was gold to me. May the best announcer ever rest in peace.

I've never been to the 500 itself but for practice and qualifications. Of which I seen none as I arrived late. But that voice comming over the PA at IMS was part of what made it hallowed ground. It reverberated no matter where you were in that small city sized place. Walking across the infield, On the backstretch. In the main stretch stands.

You'd hear the crack of the car as it hit the bricks followed by a brief pause. MEARS is on it! 229.232.

Thank you Tom, R.I.P

Will the speedway ever be the same as I have known it. Tom was always the voice of the speedway for me.

Some of my best memories from growing up are being at Indy on Pole Day with my family. Tom Carnegie made those days even more memorable. I can still hear his voice booming over the pa system, and it still gives me goosebumps. Indy will never be the same, he was truly one of a kind. R I P Tom Carnegie.
