Wimmer Wins Inaugural BOSS Winged Event

A beautiful May Saturday greeted fans and teams for the inaugural winged sprint car event for the Buckeye Outlaw Series at Atomic Speedway last night. A solid field of 26 teams signed in despite travel concerns over potential storms. Brandon Wimmer, aboard the John Shewbrooks owned car number 79A took command on lap 16 of the 25 lap main event and sailed into the history books with the victory.

Cody Gardner and Nate Dussel brought the main event to the green flag. It was 5th starting Cale Thomas who wasted little time in getting to the point and putting distance on the field. Wimmer, who started from 4th, was quickly into the runnerup spot. Polesitter Cody Gardner looped it out in turn 3 bringing out the first of 3 cautions.

Back under Green, Thomas continued to lead. By the middle stages of the race, lapped traffic played a major role. Cars were dicing side by side and sometimes 3 wide as the leaders approached.

Two more cautions would slow the race on lap 13. First, quick qualifier Danny Smith got high off the track in turn 2 and spun to a stop. Before the next lap could be completed, a minor incident in turn 3 collected Nate Reeser and Lance Webb.

With the green flag displayed for the final time, it appeared Cale Thomas was well on his way to victory, but the tricky turn 2 saw Thomas slide up and off the backstretch, allowing Wimmer to close the gap and dive under Thomas in turn 3 working lap 16.

Once to the lead, he was never contested. Behind him, the drama continued to unfold as Thomas again slid off turn 2, losing a few spots. Bryan Nuckles and Ronnie Blair ran solid races to slide into the 2nd and 3rd spots at the finish, with Thomas recovering for 4th and Danny Smith, back from the tail, rounded out the top 5.

BOSS returns to action next Saturday, May 19th when the traditional non wing stars hit the high banks of Lawrenceburg Speedway. The next winged sprint car event is currently slated for the Montpelier Motor Speedway on August 18th.
