O’Gara makes Mel Kenyon Midget Series season win record 11

Hard overnight and morning rains threw the Mel Kenyon Midget Series competitors a curve at US 24 Speedway Saturday night. They faced a soft and tacky track for the first time in 2015.

Series point leader Kyle O’Gara managed to pick up the win for his 11th victory of the 2015 season. The win breaks Spencer Bayston’s single season record of 10 triumphs, set in 2013.

O’Gara started the 30-lap feature on the inside of row two. He followed pole sitter Clayton Gaines as the two drivers established themselves in the first and second spots. The nature of Saturday’s track and the location of the cushion eliminated the option of a wide open topside forcing O’Gara down the track. He grabbed the lead from Gaines by a ¼ car length at the line to complete lap 11. Gaines passed O’Gara back only to see that move negated by a yellow flag. O’Gara would lead the remainder of the race.

Rookie Nathan Foster moved into second following a spin by Gaines and hung with O’Gara until he spun, jumping fellow Simpson World Indy Rookie Cole Roberson into the runner-up slot.

Dameron Taylor, finally solved a nagging electrical problem and had a strong run to third from the back of the starting field. Logan Huggler and Kent Kriegbaum closed out the top five in 4th and 5th.

O’Gara extended his lead in the Mel Kenyon Midget Series point battle to 128 points virtually insuring the point race will be decided at the season finale on October 10 at Anderson Speedway.
