All depends on when the last time you bought the flagman a nice dinner and a beer.

Let me please make a comment or two from the safety team's perspective.
1. Stopping ASAP as safely as possible makes our job of getting to the scene much
quicker.
2. When you do stop, pay attention...stopping next to another car can make it tough
to get a safety vehicle through to the crash scene. I have already had to stop
and back up because a racer swerved at the last second, filling an opening.
3. When the red comes out, rest assured...SAFETY VEHICLES ARE MOVING...PLEASE
GIVE THEM ROOM! YOU WOULD WANT THAT IF THEY ARE COMING TO HELP YOU!
Remember, at the end of the night, everyone goes home standing up.

I think you guys are making this too difficult. This needs to be a universal rule, you stop as soon as the red comes out, where you are, away from the cause of the red.

Problem with the rule of stopping immediately is there are to many people that take that literally and jump all over the brakes. I've junked a car due to someone in front grabbing a ton of brake in front of the field.
If the red is in front of you, don't pass it if you can avoid it, but I'd rather only see one car upsidown, than that one car upsidown plus 2 or 3 more from people climbing over each other. Remember, we don't have brake lights.

good point, ive done some major damage when people jumped all over the brakes... simple let out and make sure everyone is straight and checked up and stop as quickly BUT SAFELY as possible
