Bill Vukovich, A.J. Foyt, Jimmy Bryan, Mauri Rose, and the guy that put it in the corner when Mears backed off...Gordon Johncock.
There are two I loved but they never won a race, Loyd Ruby and George "Ziggy" Snyder. |

Then you have to go with Foyt. The only one to win front and rear engine, bricks and pavement!

I'll go nostalgic here:
The Cowboy, Jimmy Bryan. Smoked big cigars. Bill Vukovich. Won two in a row and lost his life trying for the third. Al Unser. Four time winner and for winning it in '78 the day before I left for bootcamp. Mark Donohue. A guy who could have accomplished everything in motorsports until his life was cut short Jules Goux, 1913. How can you NOT like a guy who had a glass of champagne at every pit stop? Imagine what it would have been like watching the 500 over 100 years ago! And, if I may, even though he never won it, I'd like to give Lloyd Ruby a provisional. Always loved the patriotic red, white, and blue Mongoose. Great topic. Thanks for starting the thread.
