One of the nicest gentlemen I ever met. He could also for tell the future better then anyone realizes. Many , many , moons ago, when I was a heckuva lot younger, Rube was at a movie party at the Westlake Arms apartments. I was about 17 and ask him if I was to start racing, what should I drive. He answered,"Boy , get a stock car ,because that's where the money is." Boy was he ever right. RIP LLoyd, you really were the last of the breed.

A friend of mine worked for Mike Devin on Lloyds crew (Jim Bob. Some of you guys know him). In 1974 I stayed with Jim Bob the night before the race and he gave me garage passes so I could come down to their garage after the race. Lloyd was running 3rd very late in the race and ran out of fuel. That was the first time I got to meet him in person. It was like a wake in that garage but, he treated me like I had known him for years. We talked for quite awhile and he told me he believed in fate. He simply accepted the fact that it wasn't meant to be. I wrote him periodically over the years and spoke with him monthly for about the last year. I last talked with him on Feb 18 at 7:54pm. He told me he felt like he had the cancer licked but he was having trouble shaking what he thought was a flu like virus. We were supposed to talk in the next day or two. He was a true God-fearing gentleman and absolutely one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He recently told me he wasn't afraid of dying. It was out of his hands. He would accept whatever the lord had planned for him. I want to thank those of you who took time to write him over these last few months. He told me that hearing from his fans brought him great comfort and gave purpose to his spectacular career. Thanks again for bringing comfort to one of the great human beings to bless this earth in his last days. Rest In Peace My Friend.

It just sucks that we all must go sometime. Thats just how it is though.
I only met him once or twice, a cool name, great guy and one hell of a driver. I'm approaching 40 and like many others on here I have started seeing the names I grew up with and even some I raced with either retiring and/or passing away and it is hard to believe. It has been an incredible experience and my pleasure being able to watch everyone from Foyt,Ruby,Opp,Bigelow,Hewitt and Pancho to J.Gordon,E.Gordon, Stanley, Irwin and Stewart to Stanbrough,Darland,Hines,Hollingsworth and Clauson.(And about 200 others) I just hope the next 40 will be as cool as the last.(Just not go as fast.) Ahh; Who am I kidding? Hammerdown Baby! Let's see where tommorrow will take us. RIP Rube! I appreciate the memories.

I too considered Lloyd among my favorite drivers of that era. Scotty, I got a few on ya, I'm pushin 72 years on this Planet, and I think I couldn't be any luckier, to have been able to see both ends of the tunnel, there were several before my time, but I don't feel there will be any more "great" ones, at least from this Country. I was sitting about 6 rows behind Lloyd's pit that day, you could see his unform "deflate" as he pulled out. I had an opportunity several years later, to ask him about that day, I didn't want to, but I did, and his comment was, " I might have been a little anxious", and I let the subject drop. We sure were rootin him on, woulda been nice, but then, just knowing him was nice also! Bob

Just now seeing this post and being a little misty eyed. What a sad time when you lose one of the best of the best. I remember being young and laying out in the sun with my Mom and listening to the Indy 500 we always rooted for Lloyd. We just knew someday he would win. That day has come, he has just won the greatest race ever run. We are glad to hear he was prepared to meet the Lord. RIP LLoyd and prayers go out to the family.

I am sorry to hear of Lloyd Ruby's passing. He was a personal fave of my father, long before I ever attended my first race. My father would bring up Lloyd's name many times at our dinner table when I was growing up. He was a living legend in my household. RIP, Lloyd.
