I am a computer dummy! Maybe one the computer experts out there can help me.

I recently tried to set up a new email account in Outlook Express, and I can send mail, but cannot receive any. I changed a bunch of settings in the setup, and then I couldn't send or receive. After screwing around I finally got it to send again but still can't receive any mail. I tried to ask Verizon for help and they said everything appeared to be OK, but I still can't receive...................Anybody got a clue???

Al,

I have verizon and it is just kicking me out when I try to access my email. As long as you have pop3.verizon.net in your incoming and outgoing it should be working.

Al,

What email account are you using in outlook? It may require a different outgoing setting than incoming. Example: yahoo, hotmail, ect..

In the outgoing part, you can go to advanced set-up and change it to a certain port # which may be required per provider. Make sure to check the "requires authentication" box. This may be the problem.

Try sending a message to yourself to check.

Outgoing mail works as I have it set now but not incoming.

This is the error message I get:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Verizon
DSI', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Port:
995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number:
0x800CCC0E

This means nothing to me.

Al, that would be my guess too. It looks like it is trying open a secure socket to the POP server to retrieve email and Verizon probably doesn't have individual usernames/passwords setup for each of their customers. Usually, most ISPs just use unsecured SMTP (outgoing) and POP (incoming) for email accounts.

Try what Tyler said and if it still doesn't get email, call Verizon and tell them the error message you are getting and they should be able to give you exact instructions to resolve it.

If all else fails, get yourself a free Google GMail account that you can use over the web with no configuration or setup at all. http://gmail.com

Problem solved, but don't ask me how. I did try to unselect the secure SSL box, but then I got a different error message. I don't know what I did to fix it, but it's working now.
Thanks for your help guys.

Al, I work on computers for a living and sometimes I don't even know what I did to fix them. BTW have you had any luck with getting your scanner fixed?

My film scanner is still out of service. As a last resort, I may try to open it up myself. It sounds like there are gears inside that are not meshing and it won't feed the film carrier into the scanner. I am hesitant to try to fix it myself, because I fear that I will only make it worse.
