It was feature points only since six drivers were already locked into the feature and didn't run heats.

That makes me wonder why they didnt award just feature points for the races that were just "show up" points earlier in the year. We always heard that the races that werent the "USAC" format were always show up points but this one wasnt. Having several of these shows late in the season certianly affected the points battle. Guess they make up the rules as they go along.

I can tell you that we have read the rules forwards and backwards and it says whoever amassed the points first gets the position. You can interpret that however you wish as I'm sure USAC will offer an explanation as to how it should be determined. Robert and I have talked about this and are both of the feeling that since both he and Chase "earned" the position the two places should be added together and split equally, however the end result will be up to USAC rules but that is how we feel about it.

So based on the facts, who gets the position and why?

Besides the fact that one of the competitors is willing to split the position that he may have earned, according to the facts. Or maybe not?

5.7 Selection of Champions & Ties - At the close of the racing season, the entrant and driver with the highest number of ranking points respectively shall be declared the divisional Champions. In the case of a tie in accumulated points for the champion’s position, the tie will be broken by a tally of first-place finishes. If still tied, a tally of second, third, etc. finishes will be utilized until the tie is broken. If a tie cannot be broken by the above tiebreakers, the champion will be the driver or entrant who amass their point total first. Ties for positions two through ten will be broken by awarding the position to the driver or entrant who amass their point total first. Ties will not be broken for positions eleven through the remaining participants.

That's exactly the way I thought the tie would be broken. So that means Robert would get it, right?

So if driver A came in the event with a point advantage, and needed lets say sixteen positions over driver B, and at the start of the event was involved in a pile up. Driver A finishes 20 without scoring a lap, and driver B completes the event and finishes 4, then Driver A gains the point position because he actually gained his points before driver B?? This rule needs to be clear, so that a judgement call won't be needed.

All I know at this point is that the Points Champion is clear!

By this rule, which ever driver was ahead going into the final event would get the position. Doesn't seem that complicated.

That won't fit the rule - it say whoever amassed the points TOTAL first - meaning the final number. Ballou got to it first by finishing one spot ahead. It doesn't say whoever is leading the points going in. Tough deal for both guys but you're right it's not complicated.
