What is the life span of a HANs device? It seems that is should have a set life span and then a new one should purchased. Are there any "best practices" or rules of thumb?

When should I replace my HANS Device?
•Unless it saves your life in a major wreck you may never have to replace your HANS Device.
•Keep the device away from sunlight as this attacks the high performance resins used.
•The HANS Device comes with an SFI certification sticker that has no expiration date.

I had the same questions last year before we went to the Leatt brace.

I couldn't find the orginal link but below is some of what I found. Also, the retailer where we bought the HANS gave me this bit of info. "If it has been in a heavy impact - consider replacing it."

"In a simple self-inspection in direct sunlight or a similarly bright light, users should look for signs of de-lamination, surface cracking and exposed composite material under the finish. Damage sometimes can be felt, but be careful of protruding fibers. However, even the most thorough visual and manual inspection and strength testing can fail to detect damage."

"The tethers should be replaced whenever involved in a crash, torn, frayed, worn or at a minimum of every 2 years."

Info posted above is correct. As long as your device has not been involved in a major crash that has cracked the laminate/carbon fiber is some form it should last for many years. (If not sure the unit can be sent in for inspection at anytime)

You DO need to replace the tethers: A; Every 2 years. B; After a hard hit, C; Anytime you notice them showing some wear or cut polyester material.

Padding can be replaced as needed for comfort since it will compress after a few years of weekly use.

There are some units I have seen out in the field, that are 1999-2001 vintage that work perfectly fine with new padding and tethers as needed.
