I asked Eric about it, and yes, it's to keep the hands away from the steering wheel. He said that when you're convinced you can't save it and you know you're gonna hit, tuck in the elbows and get the hands clear of the wheel. I'd have to say that those pics are the best I've ever seen that captured this. I know I've never seen two guys doing it simultaneously.
