Al, that would be my guess too. It looks like it is trying open a secure socket to the POP server to retrieve email and Verizon probably doesn't have individual usernames/passwords setup for each of their customers. Usually, most ISPs just use unsecured SMTP (outgoing) and POP (incoming) for email accounts.
Try what Tyler said and if it still doesn't get email, call Verizon and tell them the error message you are getting and they should be able to give you exact instructions to resolve it.
If all else fails, get yourself a free Google GMail account that you can use over the web with no configuration or setup at all.
