The talk around Springfield concerning the July 3rd USAC National Midget event at the Multi-Purpose Arena on the Illinois State Fairgrounds is there may be a problem with the canvas canopy that covers the grandstands. It may be deemed unsafe for use due to wind damage and/or possible deterioration.
From what we've been told by folks that live in Springfield is repairs to the canopy have been delayed for several reasons and alternative seating may be needed to accommodate the crowd for the event. Just wondered if there was any official word from someone involved with the event or the fairgrounds or a press release containing something besides rumors and/or hearsay.

I saw something on Facebook from Rusty Kunz a few days ago about this. Apparently it won't be fixed, but temporary stands are being brought in. Also, there is a hillside opposite the normal seating area that can accomodate a fair amount of people with lawn chairs. I didn't go, but in May, there was a flat track race that had to have the same seating arrangement. As far as I know, everything went ok with it.
I'm going on the 3rd & just bringing chairs to sit on the hillside. Search for the name Wanda N Rusty Kunz on facebook & it is the 1st post on that account. Rusty is the one promoting the event.

Word came out just last week that the canvas roof won't be repaired/replaced until sometime well into July, as a result the grandstand cannot be used.
Bleachers to accomodate 2700 are being placed on the opposite hill for fan seating. |

Yes leave it to the State of Illinois to drag their feet on the repairs. We heard this right after they deemed it unsafe and then they had plenty of time to take the canvas roof off of it. Oh well, bring the lawn chairs and lets go racing.

The story we were told is that the fairgrounds management had a crane company contracted to do the work but the equipment they brought in included a crane that was 15' too short to get the job done. LOL!
Anything that the powers that be regarding the State of Illinois is involved with going sideways is not surprising in the least. All indications are that the promoter has things under control and this even will go off without a hitch. We're anticipating a good show.

Went out and looked at the track and the progress being made. Can't wait for Monday.
