FIVE PAST WINNERS ARE ENTERED IN OVAL NATIONALS FIELD!

(Perris, CA, November 8, 2016) Five past winners are among the 48-cars pre-entered for this Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s 21st Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals Presented by All Coast Construction at Perris Auto Speedway. All three shows will be complete nights of racing with qualifying, heat races, preliminary and A main events.

Heading the list of past winners is the current hottest sprint car driver in the nation, Chris Windom of Canton, Illinois. The St. Louis Blues fan has won the last three USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series mains in row. His victory skein started at the Jim Hurtubise Classic at Terre Haute, Indiana on October 15th. Last week, the 2010 Oval Nationals champion swept both ends of the 410 portion of the 49th Annual Western World Champonships at the Arizona Speedway. In addition to sweeping the 410 portion of the Western World, he won the Friday 360 main event and took second to Brady Bacon in Saturday’s 360 finale. His win at the 2010 Ovals, while driving for three-time car owner winner Jeff Walker, was the most convincing win in the 20-year history of the race. In addition to his wins at Terre Haute and Arizona, Windom also has a victory this year at Susquehanna Speedway in York Haven, Pennsylvania and is currently 5th in National points.

In the first 20-years of the Ovals, only two drivers have managed to win it three times. Lincoln, Indiana’s Dave Darland, who won in 2005, 2006 and 2013, and Campbell, California racer Bud Kaeding, who stood on the top step of the podium in 2001, 2002 and 2007.

Like Windom’s win, Darland’s first two victories in the Ovals came in cars owned by Jeff Walker. In 2013 he got his third Ovals trophy in the Steve and Carla Phillips #71P. A couple of weeks after that win he came back to The PAS and won the prestigious Turkey Night Grand Prix. For the 2016 Ovals, “The People’s Champ,” will be back driving for Walker. Darland, 50, has scored one win for Walker this year. That came at Indiana’s Lawrenceburg Speedway the first weekend in April. The 1999 USAC National Series champion enters the Oval Nationals fourth in National points.

Thirty-six-year-old Kaeding is a third-generation racer who became the first driver in history to win the Oval Nationals in back to back years by getting to the checkered flag first in 2001 and 2002. His narrow win over Tony Jones in 2001 still ranks as one of the most exciting Oval Nationals of all-time. In 2002, he took home the first-place trophy the only time the race was contested over 100-laps. The three-time USAC Silver Crown Series champ won the Ovals for the third time in another thriller over Casey Shuman in 2007. Kaeding has been a regular in the “King of the West” series the past few seasons and finished second in KSW points in 2016.

Heading the list of entries from the USAC/CRA Series is two time Oval Nationals Champion Damion Gardner. The Concord, California based racer won the Ovals in 2009 and 2011 while he was still a regular in the USAC National Series. Since returning to the west coast to race in 2013, Gardner and his car owner Mark Alexander have dominated the USAC/CRA Series with three straight championships. He can make that four in a row and tie Mike Spencer for the all-time lead with five championships, before reaching this Saturday’s finale. Thus far in 2016, Gardner has posted four wins including two at The PAS. Gardner finished second to Windom at both of last week’s races in Arizona.

The other driver in the field with an Oval Nationals triumph is popular Cal Poly Pomona engineering graduate Mike Spencer of Temecula. Spencer’s win in 2012 edition of the competition was so popular even many in the press box were openly cheering at the checkered flag. Hard as it is to believe, that victory, in the famous Ron Chaffin owned #50, was the last win for the 5-time series champion at The PAS. It was also the last win for Chaffin. 2016 has been a different kind of season for the 35-year-old driver. Car owner Chaffin passed away last winter and Spencer drove three different cars early in the season before settling into the Gansen Engineering #4S on Memorial Day weekend. He is currently sixth in USAC/CRA points. In a related note, 2016 will be the first time in the 21-year history of the Ovals that the Chaffin owned #50 will not be in the race.

The Oval Nationals will take place next Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 10th, 11th and 12th. Gates will open at 4:00 PM on Thursday and Friday with racing at 7:00. For Saturday’s finale, gates will open at 3:00 PM with racing at 7:30. In addition, there will be a practice session for Oval Nationals entered cars at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, November 9th. The practice is free for fans in the grandstands and there will be $2.00 pizza, soda and beer.
