DEFENDING CHAMPION BALLOU LEADS STRONG USAC NATIONAL CONTINGENT TO OVAL NATIONALS!

(Perris, CA, November 5, 2015) Cross country rivalries are nothing new in sports. In baseball it is the Los Angeles Dodgers vs the New York Yankees. In football it is USC vs Notre Dame. In basketball, was there ever a more bitter rivalry than the Boston Celtics vs the Los Angeles Lakers? When the 20th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals Presented All Coast Construction rolls into Perris Auto Speedway on the November 12th, 13th and 14th, another heated rivalry will take place as the drivers from the Indiana based Amsoil USAC National Series will take on the local guys with the white hats from the Amsoil USAC/CRA Series.

As this piece went to press, the contingent headed west from Indiana is strong to say the least. In fact the top dozen drivers in points from the USAC National Series have all pre-entered the race. Leading the charges of the visitors is Rocklin, California native Robert Ballou. Nicknamed the “Mad Man,” Ballou whipped the field at last year’s Oval Nationals winning both Friday and Saturday nights and pocketing $30,000.00. With another evening added to this year’s Oval Nationals, Ballou could drive onto the next race in Tucson, Arizona with an extra $35,000.00 in his wallet if he sweeps the show again.

Ballou, who won the Quarter Midget National Championship in the Junior Stock Class in 1996, has not slowed down since winning last year’s Ovals. He comes into next week’s race as the leader in the USAC National Series championship point standings. The driver, who resides in Westfield, Indiana, also leads the tough series with 10 main event wins in 2015. Ballou started off the month of June by winning all three mains and taking the “Eastern Swing” title in races conducted in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The next month he won the tough “Indiana Sprint Week” title that was made up of six races in eight days in the Hoosier State.

Ballou may lead the hunt in the season long National Series, but that title is still a long way from being decided. In fact, second place driver Chase Stockon of Elizabethtown, Indiana is a mere 19-points behind in the fight for the title heading into the Oval Nationals. Thus far in 2015, Stockon has a pair of USAC National wins. One came in July at Gas City, Indiana and the other in Kokomo, Indiana in August. Stockon started out the 2015 in February by being crowned champion of “Winter Games VI,” a six race series in Florida.

Joining the top two in the hunt for the title is three-time Oval Nationals Champion Dave Darland of Lincoln, Indiana. The affable 49-year-old, who is known to his legion of fans across the nation as the “People’s Champ,” has won four USAC National mains in 2015 and is only 43-points behind Ballou with the three races at The PAS and then two nights in Tucson left in the year. This year’s biggest victory for the all-time leader in USAC National Sprint Cars wins came at the annual Smackdown in Kokomo, Indiana. Darland is one of only two drivers to have won the Oval Nationals three times. His first two wins were back to back in 2005 and 2006. His last Ovals triumph was two years ago in 2013.

Defending National champion Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma comes into the Oval Nationals fourth in points. The “Macho Man” is second to Ballou in total wins with six during the 2015 campaign. Four of Bacon’s wins in the National Series have come in Indiana. He also scored once in Florida and once in Wisconsin. In addition to his conquests in the National Series, Bacon has two other USAC victories this season. One came in Arizona at a Southwest/West Coast Series Sprint Car race in January and the other was at a Western Midget race in Tulare, California at the end of May.

The remainder of the top 12 in USAC National points who have already entered is Jon Stanbrough of Avon, Indiana, Kevin Thomas Jr. of Cullman, Alabama, 2010 Oval Nationals champ Chris Windom of Canton, Illinois, Greenfield, Indiana’s C.J. Leary, Tracy Hines of Wilkinson, Indiana, Ione, California’s Justin Grant, Ballou protégé Aaron Farney of Brookston, Indiana and the “Hanford Hornet,” Chad Boespflug of Hanford, California.

Other out of state drivers who have already entered the 20th anniversary race are Indianapolis 500 veteran Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana, Norman, Oklahoma’s Koby Barksdale, Mitch Wissmiller of Saybrook, Illinois, Mitchell, Indiana’s Brady Short, multi-time USAC Southwest Series champion R.J. Johnson of Laveen, Arizona, Josh Hodges of Tijares, New Mexico and Matt Rossi of Peoria, Arizona.

To date 49 cars have pre-entered the prestigious race and the field will swell past 50 by the time the first green flag flies next Thursday.

Teams wishing to enter the historic running of the 20th Oval Nationals can download the entry blank at the following link: http://perrisautospeedway.com/forms/15ovalform.html.

The two preliminary nights, Thursday and Friday, will each pay $5,000.00 to win and $500.00 to start.
