Kyle O’Gara closed out the 2015 Mel Kenyon Midget Series dirt schedule at US 24 Speedway in high style – claiming his 12th win of the season. O’Gara’s win extends his record breaking achievements to 14 career wins as well.
Starting from the inside of the third row O’Gara quickly made his moves on Logan Huggler and pole sitter Nathan Foster. O’Gara passed Ryan Huggler for lead on lap 3 only to see the pass negated by a Foster’s spin. After an aborted try at a restart, O’Gara went straight to the high side of the track and powered around Ryan Huggler to make the pass stick to take the lead on lap four. While O’Gara used the momentum of a flawless ride on the cushion to lead the remainder of the race, Ashlea Albertson battled with Clayton Gaines and Ryan Huggler to move in and take control of the second spot. Kent Kriegbaum, Ryan Huggler and Logan Huggler filled out the top five. In the second heat race Gaines and O’Gara dueled right to the start finish line, as the two drivers banged wheels from turn four to the flag stand on the final lap. Gaines muscled his way to the win setting a new USSA record for winning margin of 0.003. The finish prompted Gaines to ask following the race “Did I win?” O’Gara controls his own championship destiny heading to Anderson Speedway on Saturday October 10. He now holds a 180 point lead over Dameron Taylor for the 2015 Mel Kenyon Midget Series Championship. O’Gara holds serve with a maximum of 246 points available to any one driver in USSA. Due to the unpredictable nature of racing on the high banks of Anderson Speedway Taylor still has an opportunity to take the point battle away from O’Gara. |
