From the scrafan board by sprint driver Joe Gunderson (at least thats the user name). If this is true, this news will send a little shockwave to those teams looking to run this event.

Quote: "not to change the subject, but Don K. announced at the driver meeting that he would be cutting the money down for the nationals.. something like, he normally pays $90k to the field and this year will be $60k.. You think that will change the turn out? Will it still be $30k to win?" Unquote

From Ken Wagner's website:

Don Kazarian announced this week at the pit meeting that the Oval Nationals purse will be cut back this year due to the current economy crunch that has hurt racers and the track alike. This opens the door to anyone who wants to help boost the purse for the three day event. The question is how many cars will there be this year, with the seriously low car counts on a weekly basis, and will that support everyone running three days for the lower purse. The Temechula Valley Pipe and Supply $30,000 to win event has been one of the year’s top event’s for years, let’s hope it can continue. The announced $12,500 to win is a comedown, but the drop will help those on back in their pocketbook, hopefully. Dropping one night would help all the racers as the cost of lodging, fuel, tires and other parts for one day is a significant number. Perhaps dropping the USAC sanction fee would free up some cash for the racers. Maybe USAC could add cash to the purse, ha ha, not in this lifetime!

The problem is that a 2-day event is not worth the trip from the East Coast. I was amazed to read, in a report of a recent show at Perris, that there were only 20 cars. Things seem to be going so well in Indiana, but I guess not on the Left Coast?

I don't really see too much change for the car counts for the Oval Nationals, since it is a National point show, and you'll likely see the top ten or 12 national cars, along with a good West Coast representation. It'll be year end, and a lot of racers want to get that last race in...but it's never good when a promoter cuts a purse.....

Makes me wonder that since they lowered the purse, if they also lowered the entry fee and pit pass fees that Mr Hoffman has had issues with (and rightly so) the past couple of years???
It's just a question, so please don't kill me!

I attend Manzy almost every weekend, and there has been no talk of lowering the purse, but it still only a two day 410 show with 360's running 3 days.

Maybe Wags will step up to help out. Wags has their event at Ventura in the past.

At least they didn't wait till race night to cut it.

How about the promoter getting sponsorship money by selling laps do you think this would help? the nationals have been awesome in the past would hate to see it go away or be anything less then it has been....

The 2008 Wagsdash is September 6th, its the 18th year and will honor Bruce Bromme.

As of this morning the PAS said "Right now the Nationals is scheduled for 3 days Oct 30-Nov 1."
