It is not in Terre Haute, but if you continue to the West of Terre Haute, Marshall Illinois is on I-70. If you go South on Illinois 1 off the highway, just North of where US-40 crosses Illinois 1, there is a building that used to be a car dealership. Inside there are a bunch of older Indy cars. I am not sure who owns it or if it is open to be viewed, but it catches your attention when you notice it.

Are you thinking of Don Smith's collection? Very cool but a private collection.there was a collection of cars, racing cars and pacecars off 7th street as of last year.
