As part of this weekend’s “Rumble in Fort Wayne,” legendary track announcer Tom Carnegie will be remembered through a special fan-participation contest, “Be Like Carnegie.” Fans will get the opportunity to imitate the late Indianapolis 500 announcer’s famous calls, “And he’s on it!” and “It’s a new track record!”
Longtime pit reporter Jack Arute will judge the contest, which runs Saturday and Sunday. “No one embodies the Brickyard more than Tom,” Arute said. “His voice echoes through the speedway to this day, and this contest will be a wonderful way to keep the Carnegie legend front and center.” Prizes will be awarded for the best imitation, including a collector’s edition Tom Carnegie bobblehead. Carnegie, who served as chief public address announcer at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for 61 years, died in 2011 at age 91. His first radio job was at WOWO-AM in Fort Wayne. The 17th annual Rumble, held at the Memorial Coliseum Expo Center, opens its expanded, three-day format on Friday. Midgets, winged and non-winged outlaw midgets, karts and quarter midgets are part of the weekend event. Arute, who drove a midget in the 2006 Rumble in Fort Wayne, also will serve as emcee in the Pressbox Suite Club on Saturday and Sunday. Fans who purchase a special VIP package will have the opportunity to have dinner with Hall of Fame driver Tom Bigelow on Saturday and lunch with IndyCar team owner Sarah Fisher on Sunday. In addition, the package includes seating on the pressbox level, suite access and a pit pass. Race teams are reminded that a new parking and entrance plan will be in effect due to construction at the Expo Center. Information is available at www.rumbleseries.com/schedule. Arute, a SiriusXM radio host, is heard on College Sports Nation (Channel 91) and SiriusXM NFL Radio. His website is jackarute.net. Fans can follow him on Twitter (@JackOnSports) and Facebook (Facebook.com/JackArute3). Tickets and pit passes for the Rumble will be available at the door each day. |
