Muncie’s Nick Speidel won his second feature of the season on Thursday night when the Midwest TQ Racing League
presented by Jenmarco.com three-quarter midgets competed at the Rush County Fairgrounds in Rushville, Ind.
Speidel got the jump on polesitter Kyle May when the green flag waived and took command of the 20-car field. On lap three calamity struck several top contenders when Matthew Hedrick and Tate Martz made contact on the front stretch. Martz was able to drive away but Hedrick collected Ronnie Combs and both spun sideways to a stop on the front stretch.
As the rest of the field was slowing, Jon Steed ran into the back of Zach Cougill. The contact pushed Cougill into Aaron Percell spinning him out. Steed’s car bounced into the air and then hit the stopped car of Combs and flipped over Hedrick.
Steed climbed out of his overturned car under his own power, was evaluated on the scene by medical personnel, and released uninjured.
When racing resumed Speidel held the point over Tristan Maggart, Matt Arrington, May and Martz. On lap six, Brandon Ladyman slowed on the backstretch bringing out the caution. On the subsequent restart, Martz was able to get around Arrington and move into third place.
The caution waived two more times, for a cone on the track on lap ten and Mike Paxson’s blown engine on lap sixteen. On each restart, Speidel was able to pull away from the field and Maggart was able to fend off the challenges from Martz to hold onto the runner-up spot.
Speidel went on to lead all twenty-five laps to take the win over Maggart, Martz, Arrington and May. Tyler Wooten, Bobby Walton, Dalton Miller, Cody Kiewitt and Percell rounded out the top ten.
Martz started the evening off with the Watson Racing Quick Time Award after turning a lap of 12.940 seconds in qualifications. Brett Hankins won the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel, Cougill the semi feature, and the Perfect North Slopes heat winners were Hankins, Speidel and Maggart.
Logan Arnold advanced ten positions to earn the Indy Race Parts Hard Charger Award and Tyler Wooten was named the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race. Emily Hedrick won the drawing for the Jackson Oil & Solvents gift certificate.
Cody Kiewitt continues to lead the MTQRL point standings with Kyle May currently a career best second place. Kiewitt will hope to extend his point lead on Thursday July 3rd when the MTQRL three-quarter midgets compete at the Shelby County Fair in Shelbyville, Ind. The following evening, July 4th, the MTQRL will return to Rushville for the Rushville Nationals.
