MTQRL TQ Midgets Return to Montpelier on Saturday May 24th
Defending MTQRL champion Nick Speidel will lead a strong contingent of drivers and cars back to the Montpelier Motor Speedway in Montpelier, Ind. for the second race of the 2014 season. Several drivers will be looking to continue their strong showing in the season opener and some, like Speidel, will be looking for much better results. Four-time MTQRL champion Tate Martz could not have wished for a better start to his year as he won his heat race and then led all twenty laps to record his nineteenth career MTQRL feature win. Cody Kiewitt, the 2011 Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Year, raced to a strong second place finish behind Martz and currently trails him by twenty points in the season standings. Speidel, who had a tremendous 2013 season scoring seven feature wins and the championship, was unable to finish the feature and was credited with a disappointing fourteenth place finish. Another perennial championship contender, Brett Hankins, was also unable to complete the race and finished in thirteenth place. Other classes competing at Montpelier include the UMP modifieds, super streets, thunder cars, FWD compacts and mod lites. Montpelier runs a very efficient, timely program with an 11:00 pm curfew. If you have plans to attend the Indianapolis 500 the next day, racing should be completed and you should be on your way home at a decent hour. Adult general admission is $12, children 12 and under free, and pit passes are $25. The pit gate opens at 3:00 pm, practice is at 5:00 pm and racing is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm.
