Hardy Boys Solid in Season Opener

(Decatur,IL) The long cold winter has come to an end for the Hardy Boys Motorsports team. After a strong end to the 2013 USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series season with 3 consecutive top five finishes the crew were determined to have a strong start to the 2014 campaign. The teams newly minted number 66 Marion Underground Construction, Shane Wade Enterprises, Infinity Shocks, Four Seasons Ace Hardware, Simpson Race Products, R&R Enterprises, Beast/Chevy came off the trailer looking beautiful and ready to race. “Ginger” as the team refers to the car also came off the trailer fast, real fast. As hot laps concluded the team was confident that driver Shane Cockrum would have what he needed to post a strong qualifying effort.
And that he did. Going out as the fourth driver in line, Cockrum set quick time with a 21.4 second lap. Although the quick time would not last very long quickly falling to defending series champion Bobby East, the Hardy Boys 66 would hold on for fourth fast and start on the outside of the second row. This would be their highest starting position ever, as there were no issues prior to qualifying to hold the team back. As the lineup took shape and prerace ceremonies completed it was time to go racing.
Starts and restarts were a time of calamity as the field battled into turn one. Cockrum would fall back slightly in the early goings finding himself in 7th position on the initial start. He would settle in and let the race come to him just as is his typical style. “Restarts killed us, we just couldn’t get in the right line, just seemed line we were always held up, and it made it really hard to make any forward progress.” As the race progressed passing came at a premium as the high groove that had worked so well early in the going suddenly became a no man’s land. Shane engaged in an enthralling battle with 2013 Powri Midget National Champion Zach Daum, and USAC Triple Crown Club member Dave Darland over the last 50 laps or so battling for the 5th through 7th positions. “I could make it work for five or six laps out in the rubber and make up some ground on the guys in front of me, then the right rear would get hot before I could finish the pass and I’d have to take a couple laps to cool the tires down again.” When Darland made a mistake Cockrum was there to pounce and pick up the 6th position. He would make one last ditch effort at Daum but it was not to be as the Hardy Boys #66 would come home in 6th position.
“We just didn’t quite have enough tonight, but we were solid. Much better start than Indy last year, and we ran the full distance again. We’ll be back and ready at Indy, this team works too hard to not be fast, and we will be again. Shane did a great job, and all the guys on the crew are phenomenal. We’ve just got to keep plugging away,” Greg Hardy would say of his family teams night, “we’ll get em at Indy.”
