With the remnants of Hurricane Isaac swirling through central Indiana the Midwest TQ Racing League presented by Jenmarco.com dodged Mother Nature completing an entire evening of racing and fireworks on Saturday night at the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Shelbyville, Ind. Twenty three-quarter midgets and seven sidewinders showed up and put on an exciting show for the fans with both features decided in the closing laps.
During intermission the MTQRL’s Mark Frechette presented the Shelby County Fair Association with a plaque recognizing the Shelby County Fairgrounds as the “Home of the Midwest TQ Racing League” along with a $5,000 donation to the Grandstand Rebuilding Fund. Over the past four seasons the MTQRL has held nineteen of its sixty-three races on the Shelbyville oval and it is a favorite of both its fans and competitors alike. ![]() PHOTO BY CHRIS PEDERSEN (www.racephoto1.com) In three-quarter midget action three-time and defending champion Tate Martz of Rushville has been riding a three-race win streak, finally wrestling the point lead from Connersville’s Brett Hankins at the last event. Martz’s slim 7-point lead would be in jeopardy as Hankins would set quick time and then win the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel and his heat race. Martz, who qualified second, dropped out of the Duel at the start and then was unable to compete in his heat race due to a faulty oil pump. His misfortune not only gave Hankins a 22-point lead in the season standings but it relegated him to a 19th place start in the feature while Hankins’ would start eighth. Rookie Dustin Wheeldon started the 25-lap feature from the pole and took the lead from Brandon Ladyman when the green flag waived. With one lap in the books a fourth place running Cody Kiewitt spun bringing out the caution. Hankins, who had lost one position at the start, would restart eighth with Martz 15th after passing three cars on the opening lap. By lap five both Hankins and Martz were marching to the front of the field in fifth and tenth place respectively. The second and final caution of the race would fly on lap fifteen when Steve Leisure spun. Up to that point it looked like Wheeldon was on his way to his first feature win but the yellow flag placed Hankins on his rear bumper followed by Rick Robinson, Nick Speidel and Martz. On the restart Hankins’ dogged Wheeldon for the lead with Martz passing first Speidel and then Robinson to take over third place on lap sixteen. With Martz trailing just behind, Hankins finally got around Wheeldon on lap nineteen to take the lead with Martz in tow moving Wheeldon back to third place. For the next three laps the championship contenders battled with Martz finally making the pass on lap twenty-two. Martz went on to lead the final four laps in the Roger Ramsey owned Old Canal Smokehouse #1 Beast Honda to score his fourth consecutive MTQRL feature win and tie the record set by Speidel earlier in the season. Hankins would finish second followed by Wheeldon, Robinson and Speidel. Chris Mann, Ronnie Combs, Bobby Walton, Matt Hedrick and Devin Fairchild rounded out the top ten. Martz’s win moved him to within 7-points of Hankins with the title to be decided in six weeks in the season finale at Brownstown Speedway’s Fun Fest. The Duane & Sonja Alexander Hard Luck Driver award was presented to Wheeldon after the late race caution erased his lead at the front of the field. Wheeldon was also the highest finishing of the five rookie drivers and named the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race. Martz was the Indy Race Parts Hard Charger after his incredible drive through the field passing eighteen cars. Perfect North Slopes heat winners were Hankins, Mann and Wheeldon and the winner of the Jackson Oil & Solvents gift certificate was Kyle May. May was also chosen to receive the free American Racer tire but was ineligible due to not having American Racers on all four corners of his car. In sidewinder action 14 year old Jessee Holt of Columbus used a final lap restart to get beside Shane Williamson in turn four and beat him in a drag race to the checkers. Holt, driving the George Estep owned Shadow Graphix/Subway/Estep & Company/Advanced Shocks #22H took the win ahead of Williamson, Callie Wolsiffer, Kati Waggoner and Rico Dobbins. Heat winners were Bryan Stanfill and Holt. ![]() PHOTO BY CHRIS PEDERSEN - www.racephoto1.com MIDWEST TQ RACING LEAGUE presented by Jenmarco.com September 1, 2012 – Shelbyville, Indiana – Shelby County Fairgrounds QUALIFICATIONS – 1. 14 Brett Hankins-17.478; 2. 1 Tate Martz-17.719; 3. 50 Ronnie Combs-17.916; 4. 8 Bobby Walton-17.998; 5. 24 Chris Mann-18.031; 6. 40 Cody Kiewitt-18.073; 7. 12 Rick Robinson-18.141; 8. 24L Brandon Ladyman-18.164; 9. 35 Dustin Wheeldon-18.168; 10. 21 Nick Speidel-18.344; 11. 92X Matt Hedrick-18.413; 12. 39 Kyle May-18.471; 13. 74 Devin Fairchild-18.487; 14. 88 Jamie Ross-18.631; 15. 83 Caleb Faulkner-18.662; 16. 57 Rob Walton-18.809; 17. 36 Steve Leisure-18.964; 18. 16 Craig Eaglin-19.025; 19. 00 Brett Waggoner-20.392; 20. 6 Bruce Leisure-No Time.
