Daum Leads O’Reilly POWRi National Midget Series Back to Action This Weekend for Two Races

Reigning series Rookie of the Year is point leader heading into Illinois/Missouri Speedweek

MILLSTADT, Ill. (June 1, 2008) – Zach Daum is the perfect example of how the O’Reilly POWRi ladder system works. He started with the POWRi organization’s 600cc Micro-Sprints and moved up the POWRi National Midget Series last season, earning Rookie of the Year honors.

And, this season, the Illinoisan leads the series standings by 30 points over Mike Hess after three races. Daum has two top-10 finishes this season, including a season-best second at Valley Speedway in Missouri.

Daum looks to extend that lead as the series resumes action this weekend with two Illinois races, part of the inaugural Illinois/Missouri Speedweek. Daum and his fellow competitors head to Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill. on Friday and Belle-Claire Speedway in Belleville, Ill. on Saturday. Both tracks will be hosting their first POWRi races of the season, as rain forced cancellation of previously scheduled races at the track earlier this year.

Daum is also looking to become the fourth different winner in as many races this season. Brett Anderson (Macon Speedway in Illinois), Hess (Valley Speedway) and Casey Shuman (Lucas Oil Speedway) have hoisted winner’s trophies already this season. Daum is also seeking his initial POWRi Midget victory.

Nick Knepper is third in points, followed by Daniel Robinson and Anderson.

Daum’s former series, the Micro-Sprints, has assisted in increased car counts for the Midgets. While drivers and car owners have moved up, the ladder system continues to strengthen as car counts continue to surge in the Micro-Sprints, which will also be in action at Morgan County and Belle-Claire Speedways.

Eric Edwards now holds a 160-point advantage over Ben Wagoner heading into Friday’s race at Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill. Ryan Guyett is third, with Joe B. Miller and Tyler Robbins rounding out the top five in points.

In addition to Friday’s third race of the season, the Micro Sprints will also race Saturday at the Belle-Claire Speedway in Belleville, Ill. Both races will be run in conjunction with the O’Reilly POWRi National Midget Series.

Morgan County Speedway practice will begin at 6:00pm, with racing to start immediately following hot laps. For ticket information, you can visit Morgan County at morgancountyspeedway.com

Belle-Clair pit gates open at 1:00 PM and general admission opens at 4:00 PM. Hot laps begin at 6:00 PM with racing at 7:00 PM. General admission tickets are $12 each with kids 6 and under free. Stop by your local metro area O’Reilly Auto Parts Store to purchase your tickets and you’ll pay only $10.

Due to the large amount of rain that we have gotten this week as well as the 70% chance for severe weather again tomorrow we have cancelled the 6/6 races in Jacksonville. Since Saturday, we have gotten 7" of rain. Alot of the drivers that are planning on coming have quite a drive so we had to make the decision early to let everyone know. Thanks for everyone's support! We were looking forward to the show.
