Historic Montpelier Motor Speedway Set To Begin 2012 Season
When the green flag finally waves on the opening night of the 2012 season, another historic season will be underway for the 109 year old facility as the Montpelier Motor Speedway will begin its 26 consecutive season as a Saturday night dirt track facility. The east central Indiana Speedway, originally built as ½ mile horse track in 1903, began auto racing in 1952 on the Montpelier ½ mile. Harold and Lori Hunter look to continue the tradition as they enter their second year of ownership of the ¼ mile clay facility and forth year of promotion. During the 2011 season, the Hunter’s made major capital improvements at the speedway and again, the speedway will see additional improvements that are ongoing for the 2012 season. The track surface has again received extensive work in the fall of 2011 for preparation for the 2012 season. Construction is set to begin on a new ticket window and pit sign-in window to help speed up entry into the speedway. Pit and track drainage along with extensive back stretch excavation is also completed or slated for completion. New implements have been purchased to aide in working and prepping the track including a machine that will wheel pack and prep the track evenly reducing the need for extensive wheel packing sessions prior to hot laps.
