Countdown to the Little 500

Eighteen days until the 60th running of the Payless Little 500 at Anderson Speedway. 18 years ago in 1990 Jim Childers won the pole with a four lap aggregate time of 45.189 seconds. Jeff Bloom and Wayne Hammond filled out the front row. When all was said and done, however, no one had anything for Bob Frey as he sped to his 4th consecutive win in the sprint car classic and 5th overall. Frey finished 3 laps ahead of 2nd place Jeff Bloom. Hammond completed 490 laps to finish 3rd. Todd Kane (488 laps) was 4th and Stan Butler (487 laps) completed the top five.

I sort of remember that Hammond continued to race some after being involved in the Vogler tragedy in 1990, but do you know if he has since retired or...?

I'm recalling Hammond that night in the #66 car which I think was a Shore chassis.

Wayne Hammond runs a large Ford dealership in Tampa. Jack Nolan the car owner of the 66 is involved with racing by doin' a little racing promoting when the mood hits. Wayne races a IMCA type modified once in a while too. Stan is still racing sprints. I haven't heard anything of Jim Childers in quite a while.

Thanks so much for all your research in providing the updates here. I was talking to Dave Argabright yesterday and we talked about how much more exciting dirt racing is these days than pavement with one exception. The Little 500. Dave is a wonderful spokeman for the Little 500 and he certainly works very tirelessly behind the scenes to help "promote" this great event. I always look forward to the month of May for a number of reasons but the Little 500 has a special place in my heart. Thanks for the trips down memory lane.:thumb

Bently Warren held off Gene Lee Gibson to finish second, one lap down. Gibson also completed 499 laps for third. Childers was fourth (496 laps) and ageless Frank Riddle completed the top five and 494 laps.

Hi Dwight, if I did not know better, one would think you were giving the rundown from a supermodified race, Bently Warren, Gene Lee Gibson and Doug Saunier. Thanks for the countdown updates, Dwight. Best of luck to all of this years competitors. Rumors flying around Oswego say Bently is running in this years race.

I can't wait. Bob Frey was my guy. I loved the sound the V6 made coming out of turn 2.

Sixteen days until the 60th running of the Payless Little 500. 16 years ago in 1992 Donnie Adams ended Jim Childers two year pole winning streak as he clocked a time of 46.572 for the four laps to edge Childers by .035 of a second. Doug Heveron completed the front row. Childers rebounded well, however, as he held off a determined Bentley Warren for the win as both completed 500 laps. Donnie Adams was 3rd completing 495 laps. Wayne Hammond (487) and Dave Steele (475) rounded out the top five.

Fifteen days until the 60th running of the Payless Little 500. 15 years ago in 1993 Doug Heveron posted a four lap time of 43.280 to win the pole. Jeff Bloom and Jim Keeker rounded out the front row. A young man by the name of Eric Gordon would lead twice for a total of 215 of the 500 laps to post his first win in the sprint car classic. Perennial favorite Bob Frey was second, two laps down, edging out Jim Keeker, also two laps down. Fourth and fifth were a couple of Floridians, Dave Steele (489), and Wayne Reutimann (488).
