I went to Brownstown for the second year in a row. Knowing it would be a little dusty and hard, However I did see a great race last year and this year was no different

Got there about three and watched Two sheepsfoots dragged behind a tractor at least three times and I was thinking, "WHY"? the track just had a event two days ago. Surely its packed down tight enough not to come apart.

I JUST DON'T GET IT! Why pack dirt so damn tight that the most a tire grove can grab onto is microscopic sand particles? This is the second track of Sprintweek that I've attended that was like this and quite honestly. ITS THE REASON I'VE QUIT GOING TO SOME TRACKS!

They roll off the first set of hot laps and Stanbrough gasses it a bit off four and a dust cloud wiffs of the tires instead of inch long nubbins of moist clay. Like I said, I JUST DON'T GET IT!

Following was four hot laps sessions of DUST followed by a qualifying that I think about four cars got good laps out of, So we get to watch 36 of 42 cars just spinning tires for the rest of qualifications.

AHH, THEY ARE WATERING HE TRACK BEFORE HEATS............ Bout darn time! Oh wait, no they aren't just the outside of the track??????????

Heat one takes off and a wall of dust can't see anything! Car spins, yellows thrown, Drivers get lined back up and hot lapping to get back in position, Im not sure but going down the front straight they give the one to go? Cars roll through one and two and WHAT THE HELL? Watertruck barrels across turn two and onto the track into the path of the cars??????????? Seriously, NOBODY HAD A CLUE FROM THE DRIVERS TO THE STARTER! After a couple laps of wheel pack they send the cars to the pits. One driver sitting up on the hillside out of 1-2 on their quad from a later heat runs down the track on his quad just shaking his head. (I know the driver, just not saying) Anyhow thats the feeling of everyone in the house had, WTH? In my view it endangered drivers and fans by doing that at that time.

Two things, RIGHT CALL on actually watering the track! WRONG TIME! with cars rolling totally not expecting it.

OK, Its not all bad,
Now the fantastic.

They got the track watered and run in, Push back off the first heat and a total battle royal ensued. Cars running every groove imaginable and some grooves that only exist in the eye of the driver. IT WAS STILL DUSTY AS HELL BUT YOU COULD SEE IT and the drivers put on a whale of a show. From heat one to feature.

Best race of the night was probably the consi. Brady who flipped in his heat started eight and Clayton who started 13th, both driving the imaginary groove, managed to put on a clinic of how to go forward on a track where grip was also IMAGINARY!

The feature was also very good and dusty despite the track getting prepped again. Quite often tracks this hard and slick become one lane huggy pole no passing tracks. PERHAPS THE REASON I CAME BACK THIS YEAR IS BECAUSE IT DIDN'T LAST YEAR. Cars ran all over the track and off it. never knowing who would lead or pass on the next lap the anticipation remained high throughout the event. Casey rolled on to his first USAC win and he did start up front but it wasn't because he didn't have competition. Chad Boespflug led a good portion of the event and I was cheering for him. Again he pushed a bit to hard after being challenged and almost lost it. So much so they threw the yellow although he didn't spin or stall but they and I thought he would.

At one point Darland dived into the mix and I thought the Deputy thief was going to steal another win by his cunning, crafty and creative driving skills. I actually know what happened to DD and some say it was electrical problems. I say it was a FULL MOON that only added mystery to this BIZARRE NIGHT.

Later in the race, Short who was driving every line UN-IMAGINABLE came up to challenge for the top three positions, Actually grabbing second at one point and it appeared that he might get his second straight and the Full moon struck him as he got crossed up and settled for third.

This was only Casey's second sprint win, I've seen both of them. This one was USAC and a big one as many drivers drive whole careers and never achieve that. CONGRATS CASEY!

Several drivers moved forward many possitions, Gullick, battled all race to get up to eight, Cottle started 20th and was well up in the top ten playing huggy pole and I don't blame him, he was down there in the clean groove stayed out of trouble and moved way forward. Good run!

After the races I made my way back to the pits to say So long to I consider friends who I know I'll not see for some time. Buzz and Pete Gullick in town for Sprintweek and who I've conversed with for a couple years now via this site. and RACEGAL SUSAN and Debbie. The prior having a BDay this week and Unless I make the Bob Darland won't see em for another year.

BTW, CGR, *COOLEST* T shirt ever!

To sum of the night and I've seen it before like KAMP sprint week a couple years ago and here last year. Dusty undesirable conditions for viewing, the on the track action fantastic!

The night was CRAPTASTIC!

Chuck, who really loves the racing that went on. I just don't enjoy having to hold my breath and wear goggles to see a race. Rain on me with Clay Nubbins, I don't mind. Make the dust content one billion particles per square inch. YUCK, Im still sneezing it out.

P.S. Took the brothers wife and some friends to a Kings Royal several years ago. Arriving late we sat in the first five rows. I was worried Deb and the friends wouldn't like it. The cars took off and we were rained on the entire night by inch long groove nubbins. THEY LOVED IT!
I DOUBT YOU CAN EVER MAKE A FAN BY DUSTING THEM OUT, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE RACING!
