The first Indiana Sprint Week

Was anybody on this board there? It was 1981 or 1982? I heard there were almost a hundred cars there. Is that true? I can't find any original ISW records (pre-USAC) online except for Butler's 1986 win. Does NSSN do archive requests?
P.S. If you PM me, I will keep your message confidential unless you give me additional permission.

Again, the first Indiana Sprintweek was held in 1988 with Randy Kinser as the champion. USAC began sanctioning Indiana Sprintweek in 1996. Before 1988, I know there was a Tri-Track Championship.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Yes. As far as I can recall, this is Indiana Sprintweek's history of wing/non-wing.

In 1988, 1989, and 1994, the series consisted entirely of winged races.

In 1990 & 1991, the series was a combination of both winged and non-winged races.

In 1992, 1993, and 1995-present, Indiana Sprintweek has had only non-winged events.

I liked Indiana Sprint Week when it started. But if the question someone is getting at, was it bigger then or today? It is bigger today.

I remember being at a few Twin Cities openers and being well over 50 cars and theres been years since both with and before USAC that had big count shows.

However, They were not well attended *FAN WISE* at some tracks. They even took the finale to eldora one year at least I know.

Granted, Midget week started slow as well but is much newer, I remember going to the first midget week show at LBurg which I believe was a monday night and it was one of the worst crowds I've ever seen there.

Before the inaugural 1988 Indiana Sprintweek, there was a series called the "Hurryin Hoosiers" I believe.

This was a state traveling vintage racing class and im not so sure it wasn't limited in engine size. the one I seen at LBurg the second place guy was in a grant king sprinter. This I would say would be late 80s early 90s

I have been to damn near all of them since the first one and I don't ever remember any place close to a hundred cars. When sprint week started, it was similar to KISS in that it was run by the local tracks themselves. Car counts were spotty since it was mostly locals racing at the tracks that they regularly raced at. Travels were few and far between. Attendance wasn't anything like it is today and as others have mentioned, it was a mixture of wing and non wing for a few years as well.

USAC came on board and the Danners company was the first sprint week sponsor that I recall. You could go to any Danners store and pick up discount coupons to be redeemed at the track. Attendance picked up and car counts increased as well. The campers began to follow the trail and it has become the best one week of the year in most non-wing sprint car fans lives.
