I am going to watch those bar codes a LOT more now... I am busy reading the ingredients..
Boy.. shopping is a full time job!!!
ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX OR PACKAGE SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!

With all the food and pet products now coming from ***** , it is best to make sure you read label
at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying food products.

Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located.
It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin.
How to read Bar Codes .... interesting!
This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you.
GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA " AND NOT FROM *****!!

The whole world is afraid of *****-made "black hearted goods".
Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or ***** ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN *****.
471 is Made in Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the
public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN *****", so they don't show from which country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 ... then it is MADE IN *****
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 ... FRANCE
40 - 44 ... GERMANY
471 ... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK

BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number.
We need every boost we can get

Jonathan,

This is the links I get from Hoax-slayer and Snopes:

Does the EAN-13 bar code show the country of origin
KBA-01240
Answer
No, the GTIN (the bar code number) does not imply any significance.
A GTIN starts with the GS1 Prefix of the GS1 Member Organisation that allocated a GS1 Company Prefix to a company to allow them to generate GTINs and bar code their products. This does not mean that the product was manufactured in a specific country or by a specific manufacturer, it may have been produced anywhere in the world.
You can type the full number into the GEPIR system and find out the company information. For more information please try http://www.gepir.org

If you wanna search try here:

Sorry, I'm a nerd. Had to research it a little more. Thanks for posting and getting me interested in this matter!

Jonathon, thanks for the barcode items. I never knew there was a designation for the country of origin. I will be on the lookout when shopping. And yes, you are right. We shouldn't rely on Washington but take the initiative ourselves.

My new years resolution (actiually started Dec. 28) is to make an effort to buy things made in the USA. I haven't always been successful but I'm trying. Last week I had to give in and buy Chinese starters for a flourescent light because American made starters are no where to be found. But I am amazed at the things that are made an the USA while shopping, even at places like Dollar Tree.

Blue Jeans still honk me off. An All-American originated product that Levis, Lees and Wrangler now shifted their manufacturing out of the country. There are still blue jeans that are manufactured in the USA and they will get my business when the time comes.

I've been looking for and buying " made in the USA " products for quite some time. Some items you simply cannot find. The only tennis shoes I know that are made here are New Balance. I gave my daughter a request last Christmas for new socks made in the USA. Her reply was "Dad, thats impossible." She did her homework and found that Macys carries several styles and colors, most are cheaper than the imports.
Gregg I was told by a rep from Levis, their denim material was produced in North Carolina and sewn in Mexico, same for Wrangler. I'm glad people are finally starting to pay attention to where products are produced, just wished we all would have started long ago.

Did some research a few months ago and found that a town in Ch**a was renamed usa, so a "made in usa" item does not really mean" Made in the good ole USA.

I'm as patriotic as anyone but what would happen to our exports if every country did that?
