UMRA Heads Back to Mount Lawn
By Alex Wollf

The 50th anniversary season of the Dutch Mill Buffet UMRA TQ Midgets continues on Saturday night with the fourth and final trip to the Mount Lawn Speedway in New Castle, Indiana. The biggest difference between this Saturday’s race and the first three will be the distance as the race will be 50 laps instead of the usual 25. One thing that will not be different is that the competitors will be chasing Terry Goff at Mount Lawn. Brent Turner in September of 2008 was the last driver other than Terry Goff to win a feature at the historic and tricky third-mile track. Terry’s biggest challenge at Mount Lawn this season has come from his son Jason who battled his father late in the going at all three races held at the track in 2010.
As always there will be a pair of contingency awards that the drivers will complete for. The “Tony Stewart Rookie Challenge” will give $50 to the highest finishing rookie. Scotty Orme leads Jon Steed by just seven points in the fight for rookie of the year that has been entertaining all season long. The G&G Oil “Hard Charger of the Race” will award five gallons of fuel to the driver that advances the most positions in the feature. The youngsters will want to get their parents to bring them out to the track as one lucky fan will leave Mount Lawn with a brand new kid’s bike. Another exciting addition to the night is that when the UMRA T-Shirt toss happens during the evening, the fan that gets the 2010 50th anniversary shirt will get to throw the green flag for the feature!
The racing at Mount Lawn is always exciting and Saturday night should be no exception. Gates open at three, practice is at 5:30, qualifying is at 6:15, and racing is set to begin at 7:30!

Top Ten in UMRA Points (After Nineteen Races)
1. Terry Goff 2713
2. Jason Goff 2358
3. Robbie Roland 2141
4. Ron Combs 2015
5. Doug Roland 1920
6. Michael Koontz 1892
7. Brandon Gray 1773
8. Scotty Orme ® 1643
9. Jon Steed ® 1636
10. Ron Hamm 1607

This Saturday night marks the end of the 2010 racing season at the Mt Lawn Speedway located near New Castle. 50 lap season championship races will be presented in the Late Models, Thompson Builders Thunder Cars, MC Auto Repair Hornets and UMRA Midgets. Indy FasKarts will also be on the racing program along with Mt Lawn Big Wheels.

Point races in two of the three divisions are still up in the air. In the Late Models Eric Evans of Greenfield leads Jeff Marcum of Morristown by just 10 points and in the MC Auto Repair Hornet division Brian Lewis of Indianapolis leads Joyce Dyer of Greenfield by 17 points. Neil Marcum of Morristown has wrapped up the Thompson Builders Thunder Car title as he holds a commanding 258 point lead over Chris Bolyard of Rushville.

The MC Auto Repair Hornet feature will be a memorial race in honor of the late Gene Cook who passed away earlier this year. The 50 lap affair for the Hornets will pay $300 to the winner and $200 for the fast qualifier. Eric Evans has been a tear lately as he has won the past two feature events and is the man to beat for the Gene Cook trophy.

The final race of the year will be a 10 lap Loop‘d Loop race for the MC Auto Repair Hornets. The race is a standard counter clockwise race with the exception that the cars must negotiate around the timing light hump located just off the inside of the track at the start finish line at the end of each lap. The checkered flag will fall on the car that makes it around the timing light hump first on the final lap.
