Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 4, 2010) – With the $60,000 championship battle at full boil, the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National series makes its first ever appearance at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL, on Friday night, August 27.
Not only will the August 27 card mark the inaugural Lucas Oil ASCS appearance atop the 3/8-mile Tri-City Speedway clay oval, it will also be the first ASCS National event in the state of Illinois since 1997.
With the series averaging 48 cars per race night through the first half of the season, 16 teams have taken in each event as they battle it out for their portion of the $250,000 points fund.
Rising to the top of the point charts and set to slug it out for the top spot are reigning series champion Shane Stewart of Bixby, OK, 2008 champion Jason Johnson of Eunice, LA, and 20-year-old Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, OK.
Johnson and Bacon sit atop the win charts with four victories apiece through July 30, with Stewart bagging a pair of wins. Seven different drivers have posted wins through the initial 15 events of the season with other winners including Zach Chappell on a pair of occasions and one-timers Matt Covington, Sammy Swindell and Danny Wood.
In addition to Stewart, Johnson and Bacon, other Lucas Oil ASCS title contenders include 20-year-old Nebraskan Jack Dover, 2001 champion Zach Chappell, two-time Short Track Nationals champion Tony Bruce, Jr., three-time ASCS National champion Tim Crawley, Danny Wood, California’s Kyle Hirst, Ricky Logan, Matt Covington, Ohio’s Darren Long, Dustin Morgan, Channin Tankersley, Austen Wheatley and Justyn Cox.
While Johnson holds the edge in the title chase as of July 30, California shoe Hirst holds the Brodix Rookie of the Year lead over 20-year-old Glenpool, OK, racer Covington, with other Rookie contenders including Morgan (Tulsa, OK), 18-year-old Tankersley (Highlands, TX), 17-year-old Wheatley (Lake Stevens, WA) and 16-year-old Cox (Clarksburg, CA).
The semi-banked, 3/8-mile Tri-City Speedway dirt oval is located in Pontoon Beach, IL, off I-270 Exit 4 then 0.5 miles south on SR 203 by Granite City. For more information, contact the track at 800-617-9077.
