Dutch Mill Buffet UMRA TQ Midgets Head For Montpelier and Kokomo
By Alex Wollf
The 50th anniversary season of the Dutch Mill Buffet UMRA TQ Midgets continues this weekend with a doubleheader at the Montpelier Motor Speedway on Saturday night and the Kokomo Speedway on Sunday. Saturday’s event at Montpelier will be a twin bill as there will be the regular program along with a makeup feature from the May 8th event that was rained out after the heat races. Before Mother Nature took the checkered flag for the night at Montpelier, heat races went to Robbie Roland, Brandon Gray, and Ron Combs. The cars and stars of the UMRA will return to the Kokomo Speedway for a Sunday night show where last August Terry Goff was able to hold off Ron Combs for the win.
This past weekend the weather cooperated and two great races were run at two great venues. On Friday night Ron Combs took an exciting 25-lap feature on the red clay of the Bloomington Speedway in his car that carries the #50 in honor of the 50th UMRA season. The win was the 23rd of Ron’s UMRA career and moved him into a tie with Bob Hamilton for sixth on the all-time win list. The scene shifted on Saturday night to the Brownstown Speedway where after a long rain delay, Oogie Goff completed an amazing comeback story as in his first race back since a leg injury suffered in an off-track accident last summer he took the 45th victory of his UMRA career.
There will be a pair of contingency awards up for grabs both nights this weekend. The G&G Oil “Hard Charger of the Race” will give the driver who advances the most positions in the feature five gallons of fuel. At Bloomington on Friday night Ron Combs was the hard charger by coming from 8th to 1st, at Brownstown on Saturday night the fuel went to Jason Goff who advanced from 6th to 2nd. The highest finishing rookie in the features this weekend will receive $50 from the “Tony Stewart Rookie Challenge.” At Bloomington Jon Steed was the highest finishing rookie and at Brownstown it was Ryan Koontz.
On Saturday night at Montpelier the gates open at 4:00 PM, hot laps are at 6:00, and racing is scheduled to begin at 7:00. On Sunday at Kokomo the gates open at 3:30 PM, hot laps are at 5:45, and racing is schedules to begin at 7:00.
