Thats a good clip from the speedway scene toward the end of the old "To Please a Lady" movie with Clark Gable and Barbara Stanwyk. There is some great midget footage earlier on in the movie. My grandfather Jack Stroud was one of the drivers in the midget scenes. I think that Duane Carter, Johnny Parsons, and Danny Kladis were also "stunt" drivers for the racing scenes during the filming of the movie.
I was a pretty good movie actually, kind of cool to see some pretty big name actors for the time in a movie about Midget and Big Car racing. Somewhere i have some old shots of my Grandparents out to dinner with Clark Gable, and some old promotional stuff. Steve |

I have seen the movie, though it's been some time ago. The video was dramatic with the lightening in the background and the Indy car on the track. I liked it alot and thanks for posting!

Thanks for that link.
I love the scene where Mauri Rose's car bursts into flames, they put the fire out and he gets back in the race. That was a real deal. Several years ago, the Speedway put out a press kit that included a photo of the start of an Indianapolis 500. If you looked closely, Clark Gable was sitting in the front row in what was purported to be Tony Hulman's seat. Many years ago I was given a home-made book about AAA Championship racing that had been damaged in a fire. The first three of four pages included autographs of drivers -- including many who were long gone when I got it. I had never heard of a race car driver with the last name of Gable. Then I figured out it was the movie actor. Jim Morrison Editor Hawkeye Racing News |
