We have had several threads on IOW dealing with ways to get new fans involved in sprint car racing. Younger fans, families, etc. Although this link is about stock cars and is located in California why couldn't we do this in Indiana? Stock block 305's, hard compound tires, no cockpit adjustables. Cheap (as possible) sprint car racing. These students will learn everything about running a race team from building and setting up a race car to getting sponsors. In the process we will introduce a couple of hundred teens to sprint car racing and they will bring their families and friends. Check it out. http://www.racingwest.com/news/story...098/index.html

It's Funny, I just got off the phone with someone asking me why I didn;t put something like this togather to run with the WolfPack or on its own..... I know they run these over in Ohio as a 305 Winged Class that has some support. I agree that it would do nothing but help and this is not like your starting a whole new bread of animal.... Probably plenty of used chasis out there, all be it bent and banged but probably workable.... I think in Ohio those guys run with Stock Rods and a more or less Stock Rocker Rule....NO Roller Cams.... Affordablility is the key, that and being able to keep the Purse down..... If you can get enough Cars and make them understand that they will be RAcing to Learn there Craft, not to make money... Run regular shows for 3 to 500 to Win with maybe 1 or 2 bigger shows at the end as a Reward..... Remember, no matter How Good an idea it is, If the Tracks can;t make money at it, They Won;t Be Interested.........

They will make money at it. If you have 20 teams there will be a minimum of 5 people per team (probably more). That is 100 pit passes. Even at $20 that is two grand. That alone will more than pay the purse and the families and friends of those teens in the pits will be in the grandstands at $10 or $12 a head. It's a win-win for everybody.

I hate the idea! Not everyone is supose to be able to race sprint cars! That's what modifieds and street stocks and thunder cars are for:headbang:
Find something you can afford to race and do it.
Don't make the greatest class of race cars GENERIC:doh:

There are folks among us that would like to field a car but cannot afford to, this would allow them there participation as well. I have a friend named Kevin Weldon that I got into karting many years ago and he has proved to be a super talented driver and setup person across the U.S. not just locally, I looked at maybe purchasing a sprint to run a limited schedule, but it turned out that unless we wen't with near junk equipment it wasnt going to work, we have talked to a few owners about renting a ride for next season but without Kevin having any experience in a sprint we dont' seem to get much interest. This concept would put us in business. :checkered:

Aero, I agree that not everyone is supposed to be able to drive sprint cars. But the fact is that here in Indiana there are about 130 sprint cars competing on any given Saturday night. It would be a lot better for all if those coming into the 410 arena had some experience racing that type of car. It is very similar to what Flemington had with their Rookie division. If you had no or very little experience in a sportsman type car you ran the rookie class. If you won three times you moved up. At mid season the class as a whole moved up with a half season of experience under their belt. This idea will be a huge benefit to local sprint car racing. Aspiring drivers will get experience, those aspiring to be team members or team owners will learn how to operate a team. New, young fans will be drawn to our sport. And promoters will make money from it. I fail to see a downside here.

I agree. The problem is that I won't buy a mod or stocker so I just sit on the side lines, which is not a problem really, you and Dwight both have good points. Dwights being that with this class guys like me are now buying pit passes instead of general admission, however I agree with you that "hey, sorry but not every kid makes the team".

Well, not having everyone Agree with an Idea, doesnt mean it wont work guys. Aero, I suppose you have a point, but in case you havent noticed, about all the new young talent you see coming into Sprints right now seems to be comming from out West, with the Money to Get Here..... There are some Great exceptions, with Brady Short and Jeff Bland just being 2 that have "stepped Up" in the last couple of years. I think Ott will make it as well, but for those few Most of the New Talent seems to be imported. Also, these 14 and 15 year old kids are tearing up a Lot of equipment, Not to Mention that its just a Matter of Time before we loose one of these kids and That Will Hurt Us All and not just in Racing... In This area, Sprint Cars are Cheaper to Run than a Mod, I know several of the Modified guys that might try and move up. This might also be a bigger Win for the Tracks. Wide tires to help work a track in is always a plus. Another thing to help make this work would be to "Incourage" self starters. Hey its a 305 not a 410, it shouldnt be that big a deal to set them up, but I said incourage, not mandate. Not for the first 2 years or so. You might also make part of there races, Winged Shows. I know that goes against the grain at Bloomington, but remember, your trying to make this a class to learn in and running Wings might give you a Better Chance getting on the schedule at some tracks. In other words, the tracks wont be worring there fans about there tracks running Wings, if they know its a Support Division. Lots to think about and for now its just that, food for thought.....Wolfe-e
