Checkered Flag Solo Lap?

What ever happened to the flag person or representative of the club/org handing the checkered flag :checkered: to the winning driver and letting him parade around the track solo one time? This certainly would, IMO, put a finishing touch and a proud moment for all to watch as the driver circles the track holding the checkered flag. Not just the feature but heat races and semis also.

No, I honestly agree with DM this time. In the 70s they always stopped at the flagstand and got a photo with the flag, Didn't matter if it was a heat, Semi or feature and the victory lap was celebrated.

It also gave the crowd a chance to applaud the good work of the driver/team.

How come there have been all sorts of TIME SAVING moves in racing and we keep getting home later and later? Qualifying, Dash's, D,C mains? All gone and we still leave 11:30 I remember three classes with all those things and being outta there well before that.

Chuck, not bashing the racing we have but the separation between the racing and the fans is very aparent.

Don, I hate to even suggest it but you do tend to see the old solo lap in fender cars and open wheeled cars with starters (like your chaindrive buddy!). I think most sanctions and tracks like to speed the show up and I would rather see the solo lap. Even if they have to push off again. See you in Tulsa pretty soon.

It would certainly add more flair to midget events. How much more time would that take anyway? The winner just stays out there until all the cars are off the track. A solo lap and he's off the track. Maybe 2 minutes at the most. IMO, the crowd would love it. When I drove quarter midgets (on the dirt), it was a proud moment to carry the flag solo around the track!!!

Badgerfan.. looking forward to seeing you at the Silly Ball.

I think this also went out with the drivers getting 2 trophies.... one of which they kept... the other they handed out to children along the fence after the race.... yes I remember this days... I never got one, but the thrill of almost getting one from the driver was thrilling. Paragon always had a trophy dash just for that.... oh the memories.:crying:

This is an excellent idea. Properly done it would not add any time to the show. A solo lap would take less time than what is needed to line up the next race. And the trophy idea has merit as well. We constantly talk about attracting young fans. You would probably make a fan for life out of every kid that got one of those trophies.:applaud::thumb:

One of the problems implementing the idea is that the flag person no longer is at track level. He's up on a stand. But..... the race steward could easily take on the responsibility of giving the flag :checkered: to the racer.

One of the many reasons and the fondest memories I had was waiting on dad to let me go down with all the other kids....:wink1:
