While I have heard of Kevin Bacons band what have they produced? Nothing, I doubt anyone cares. Photographing Bacon is like taking a picture of a Bomber car. People will pull it out years from now and say "I remember that time".

What I have learned since I decided to pick up a camera a couple of years back is that for a lot of static, well lit pictures, the ol' point and shoot does a fantastic job. I just got one for my day job that is just a little larger than a credit card, has over 12Mp resolution, 4x zoom, and has many features that my D300 also has, and some that the D300 does not. It does a great job when I am shooting pictures for my day job reports in shipyards, offshore, inside vessels, etc. I prefer it to my dslr for those uses because of size and maneuverability. But, when it comes to shooting fast moving objects, especially in low light. Well, THAT is where I find the point and shoot inadequate.
