No, he didn't walk away, the crash was fatal. I find it amazing they put a wall around the inside of the curve. And then they curved it around towards the infield. There would have been plenty of room for him to spin through the infield. Hopefully they change that configuration in the future. Ex-Nascar driver Chad Little (for those who remember him) is the director of Nascar Mexico, kinda surprised he allowed that track configuration with his experience.

It starts out with them hoping he is ok. They said they could see his head moving. Next part is them saying that the second place car should not be hitting him on that part of the track. They were going 200 kilometer (120 mph) It was on lap 97 of 100. Then it was about any other place on the track he would have hit a safer place. Bad luck to hit the end of the wall. If you click on the other videos at the bottom. It tells he was married- two kids. He was alive when he was taken out of the car. But died in the helicopter. His brother was in the race also. The race was not restarted and he was made the winner. Best as I can tell you. They talk real fast so hard to pick all of it up. The track is in Puebia. A few hours east=south of Mexico City

Puebla is where the VW plant(s) are. It is a major industrial area.
