Tucson, Arizona (May 31st, 2009) – Rickey Hood snared his second consecutive American Sprint Car Series Southwest Region victory by topping Saturday night's 25-lap main event at USA Raceway.
Moving forward from seventh, Hood took the lead in Joe Herrera's No. 45x entry when defending series champion Rick Ziehl ran short of fuel less then two laps from the checkered flag. Hood took the checkered flag in front of Ben Gregg, with young gun Joshua Hodges taking the show position. After leading the opening circuits, John Gaston settled for fourth with Kaylene Verville rounding out the top five. Mike Martin charged from 17th to sixth, with Ronnie Clark, Cody Cambensy, 18th-starter Jessica Van Dyke and Ron Kratz completing the top ten. Gregg, Davis and Gaston topped heat race action with Martin winning the "B" Main. John Priest, who won the first outing at USA Raceway for the Arizona Modlite Division, returned to his winning ways as he routed the Modlite field. Priest drove from his 6th starting place beating Chris Shafer and Travis Meilebroeck and extending his points lead over Jay Foster in his quest for a 2009 championship. Aaron Jones came from deep in the field to take his first Desert Dwarf Car victory of 2009. Jones beat Sandy Matthews and Chad Bennett as he gained ground on the Dwarf Car point leader Chad Stewart. An exciting X-Mod race was settled after 15 laps of close side by side racing. James Fleming topped action in the second outing as the field continues to grow and the competition heats up.
