Flagman?

I finally got my Sprint Week 2008 DVD and I have a question.
At Kamp Speedway, why was the flagman flagging the race on the ground from the inside of the track instead of the flag stand? My guess was it was so dusty he could not see from the flag stand. |

The flagman was on the inside of the track because after the first session of hot laps there was concern he might be in danger. The way the track flows, the outside flagstand is a great target for a sprint car. I proved these concerns to be very real when I tried to scoot the wall back during qualifying.

Kevin, your car landed in front of where I was siting. There is no way I would want to Flag Kamp from the flag stand when sprint cars or midgets are running. It looks to be much safer on the inside of the track for the flagman.

At Belle-Clair, for both the POWRi shows and the weekly Friday night program, all the races are flagged from track level.

That was exactly the case. The USAC flagman was concerned about the danger of the positioning of the flagstand being in direct line with the sprint cars exiting turn four and Kevin's flip almost proved his point. He moved to the inside of the track for safety. There was an additional concern during qualifying that the drivers could not see the flagman because of the sun being directly behind the flagman as they exited the corner.
Good video capture. Joe |

There's another flagstand that's an accident waiting to happen. That's @ Farmers City. While flagging for the SCRA/NWWC series with my partner (2 in the stand), I was shocked how the stand was placed just on the inside of the front stretch. If 2 cars touched wheels just right, a car could quite easily veer left and hit that sucker. The "box" you were in left for no chance of escape either!

A certain flagman that stops down at the track quite often, heard Levi told him after race 2 years ago that "You got the biggest set here tonite" :respect:
1980 or 1981 saw the flagstand get taken down with the flagman and two others still on it at Sandusky Speedway. Upright sprinters ran with the supermodifieds and two of them got together and that was all she wrote. Stand was in infield and stretched out 20 feet or so, very scary moment |
