+#49 Frankie Mack, #50 Bud Holmes, & #2 BobCarrigan were scheduled to make this a 24 car feature field but were DNS's for some reason.
+As you can see, all races, including the feature, were completely inverted. So they had a "one second rule" whereby if you ran 1 second faster in the race than you had qualified, and they caught you, you were DQed. Intended to discourage "featherfooting" in time trials. I'm guessing that I left the track thoroughly P.O.ed that night after my boy "Sheldon" was victimized by a faulty timing light. :wink
+One of IOW's finest, Butch Wilkerson (Butch47265), had a nice night here. I have some upcoming retros where he fared even better. :thumb
+Another IOW member, John Mugavin (wallbanger II), elected to start on the tail of the Stock Car 50 Lapper, mayhaps to avoid a takedown by the dreaded 1 sec. rule, after he timed in at a slow for him, 18.44. Calvin Dean had been FQ in #56 at 17.17. John brought his #57 from the rear of the 20 car field to finish 4th :applaud: in the feature won by #55 Paul Crockett with #11 Earl Smith in second.
+I'm looking through old steno pads trying to determine who Johnny ?? in the #44
was. I must have been chugging a Burger Beer when they announced his last name. Bob Papoy drove a #44 some the next season ('69). Might have been Johnny Krebs. Any IOW oldtimers have an idea???
+Flip John is a mystery to me as well. Don't remember him at all. Might have been an alias like Frankie Mack or Smoke Johnson.

Thanks, Fish. I enjoy seeing the "old time" names and recalling who I saw race-all but 4 or 5 on this list. Bob Papoy is one name I haven't seen/heard in many a moon.
Happy holidays to all and congrats to Danny B. on his BARC raffel win!!

Some good drivers in that list. I might have been at that race but I was only 4 yrs old so I was probably pretend racing in the dirt somewhere near the stands. I remember going to Lawrenceburg many times when I was little. Nice to see Dad won the 2nd heat not too well in the feature though. I think that was the 1st year for the yellow big block #22. They had problems getting that car to hook up until it got upside down and over the fence at Haubstadt one night. My Dad was telling me that after that the car was just hooked up every time, the chassis got tweaked a little.
Concerning #44
"Might have been Johnny Krebs. Any IOW oldtimers have an idea???"
That's very likely, he won a lot of races back then and I seem to remember him driving a 44.

In regards to the DQ of Sheldon. The story I was told follows.
It had something to do with someone in the stands timing the races, not an official. Evidently my grandmother was upset with Dizz Wilson's wife and Bill Starr's wife thinking they had something to do with the false timing report. My dad claimed he too had a stop watch and he had different results. My mom told me that they had to restrain my grandmother. Also, apparently they had already given Sheldon the trophy. He took it and put it in the front of the truck. He then informed those at the track he might not get the money but there was no one there that was big enough to take the trophy back.
I recall going to the grocery store with my grandmother when I was a teenager (1992 or 1993) and Mrs. Starr there. My grandmother still would not speak to her and that was almost 25 years later!
Again this is just what I was told.

Going back a bit more, I recall Frankie Mack driving a home made looking job, a yellow #12. This was before a few here were born...Danny Burton
That yellow #12 was built by a guy named Art "Burkie" Burkhart. My father, Bruce Stevens, drove for burkie for several years and finally had to quit to keep the family together. Shortly after dad gave it up, Burkie built the modified Danny mentioned above. It was built like a go-kart. The frame was spring metal and there was no front suspension. The front axle was welded solid to the frame just like a go-kart. It had a beer keg for a fuel tank. It had a 312ci Mercury in it (the same motor that was in the modified that my dad drove). For the most part, the car was very loose and not competitive but, there were a couple of nights when it actually ran pretty decent. I also believe that Joe Burdette (Brett's grandfather) drove it after Frankie got out of it. Burkie also had a brother named Jake and I believe Jake was affiliated with the Gutzweiler car that ran in USAC back in the 60's. I think Stan Bowman was killed in this car at Terre Haute. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.
