I guess NASCAR didn't want Jimmy Johnson to be a 3-time champion. It looks like they have done away with the Chase for the Cup and have reverted back to the old point system. See the 2008 OFFICIAL DRIVER STANDINGS

Congratulations Carl Edwards on your championship :wink

1- Carl Edwards - 5,236 points
2- Jimmy Johnson - 5,220 points
3- Kyle Busch - 4,984 points

I've never been a fan of the "chase". If you're the best, most consistent team throughout the season, why shouldn't you get the trophy? And it isn't like you only lose 1 or 2 spots. Look at Dale Jr, he finished 12th in the "chase", yet in reality he finished 7th overall for the season. That's gotta be a few bucks difference between 7 and 12. I'm surprised his rabid fans aren't screaming bloody murder to get rid of the "chase". Not to mention, as Sandy pointed out, Edwards getting the golden screw award.

NASCAR might think the Chase makes it more interesting, but I think the last real time there was any big interest in the points chase was when Alan Kulwicki won it.

Wonder how Alan would have ended up under todays rules??

Has it really been 15 years since he was killed?? Time flies.

I too think that the point champ should be the team that had the most consistant season. They don't see it that way and it is their ball. So if it's going to be different, then really change it.

Personally, I think if they are going to use the chase format, they need to also change the amount of points paid out in the last 10 races.

Say the first 5 races pay double points to win and the last 5 pay triple points to win. Same with laps lead, pole and most laps lead.

My feeling is if you are going to blow it up, then really change it.

"Wonder how Alan would have ended up under todays rules??"

I think Alan would of loved it. I also think he would shined if they go to a "no testing" scenario.

He did a lot with nothing and I think that was the original intent of Nascar.

Even if they went to no testing. Alan would analyse the data, mabe rent
a "7 Post" for a few hours, borrowed a little wind testing data, sat down and did
his homework and raced his way to "Victory" if that is what the good Lord wanted.

As it was the Good 'Lord' wanted him "HOME" up in the clouds and he can only
look down and Prey for Us ALL!...lol!

Larry "O" Racing and thanks for the Post.:moon:

I think the chase has killed Nascar. I rarely watch anymore. Expecially since Gordon got screwed out of a championship by the system.

If they wanna setup a four race deal after the season or something. I could see that but race 2/3rds of a season then eliminate all the hard work done to that point is just BULL to me. Shorten the season five races. End it in mid oct and then have a series of four or five races in different formats. Hell make one of em go clockwise and see who the overall DASH for CASH winner is.

Nationwide and The trucks both proved that championships won the hard way (Full season) are better.

Chuck, its more than just the chase thats wrong, The cars, the tracks, Elminiating a darlington race? SHEESH.

Nope Chuck,

You got it all wrong. You got to get the Ratings UP. You got to make
it a Gun Slinger type of Shoot out.

You get into the "Chase" and each week you eliminate one racer.

In the last race you just have two guys and they go at it. Best Man/Winner
takes it all.

Now that a "man's" race that every woman would die to see the outcome.

Think Racing. Think "mud wrestling". Think action and anticipation. Think
of the Glory. Now, that would get the ratings up and every week anybody
and everybody would tune in to see "Who is the Last man Standing"!:Steer

If they're trying to make a true "playoff" format, then why don't they:

Ditch the points system altogether for the 12 guys who make the Chase cut.

Then, shorten the Chase to 11 races (or raise the number of guys to 13) and eliminate the lowest-finishing guy after each race. That would be a true playoff, and would surely increase interest and excitement. And if you want to add a twist, you can say that if a Chase guy won the race the week before, he's immune from elimination the next week (barring the final week.) You're always going to have the championship go down to the last race (unlike this year and years prior, when it's all pretty much been decided.) It's built-in, guaranteed drama each and every year.

Had this been implemented this year (assuming the Chase was expanded to 11 races so the math works), Jimmie Johnson would have been eliminated after his 15th-place finish in the Texas race. Carl Edwards would have won the title over Kevin Harvick -- who finished a semi-close second to Edwards in the season finale, by the way. Tell me that wouldn't have been better TV than what we had instead. And, that proves this system can determine a fair champion, since Ovalmeister's post showed that Edwards was the real overall points winner, anyway.
