Phoenix - West Valley

This is the latest info I want to share with everyone planning a trip west for the races.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 nine new mobile speed cameras will be activated along Loop 101 in Glendale and I10 in Buckeye. These new cameras will join mobile cameras already being used on I10 between the Loop 101 and Interstate 17.

Drivers traveling 10 mph or more above the 65 mph posted speed limit will be photographed and fined $165; a surcharge takes the cost to about $185.

The law states no points will be counted toward a driver's record if the violation is a civil one. However, points are counted if the driver is found speeding more than 85 mph, which is considered a ******** offense.

A state initiative was started in September to install 100 of these cameras across the state. Gov. Janet Napoolitano has estimated $90 million could be raised in the first year. But authorties have said the program is aimed primarily at saving lives rather than producing revenue through citations.

Speed Camera Update - I spotted five of these locations today. Two along the south bound lanes of Loop 101 in the new sports complex area; one near the Olive Exit and one just south of the new Bethany Home Exit.

The other three were along the east bound lanes of Loop 101, the first one is just past the Union Hills Exit; this area is where you also change from going north to heading east. The second one is right after you pass under 59th Ave. and before the exit for 51st Ave. and the third one I spotted is near the 35th Ave. area.

There are four pieces of equipment at each site, really very noticeable from the opposite side of the road. However driving in three lanes of heavy traffic you can drive right pass them and not see them. Pass the info out to all of your friends heading west - let's make sure no one from the racing community contributes to Gov. Janet Napolitano's $90 million fund.

Like most states Arizona is facing huge deficits in tax collections so installing speed cameras is an easy way to help balance the budget. The town of Star Valley just east of where I live is taking in huge amounts of fines with it's pair of camera's on Rt 260 within a mile of each other set to take your picture when you are traveling more than 11 mph over the posted speed limit. That said, they are required to post signs that you are entering a photo enforcement zone. If you are foolish enough to not heed the signs, then you will pay the piper. Also the town of Star Valley has Pete's Place a titty bar with a steer on top of it's sign. A definate "must see"?
